What I’m trying to determine is this what we need to do to use our own domain for a hosted implementation.

I gave my network administrator this text from your FAQ:
  • Can I use my own domain name for my hosted community?
  • Yes - this is available on all packages except the Starter 5. After your purchase, you will need to update your domain nameservers to: NS1.IPSLINK.COM and NS2.IPSLINK.COM
And my network admin's response was this:
  • That’s requesting that we change DNS hosting entirely to their service. Can they not just provide us the DNS records we need to create?
In other words, we already have a web site. We are not going to host our entire web site with IPS. We just want to use the Board, Blog, and Downloads services. Is there a way to use the IPS hosted service on our own domain without having to host our entire site with you? Can we change DNS for specific sub-domains or something like that?

For example, can I have blog.ourdomain.com, downloads.ourdomain.com, and forums.ourdomain.com go to our IPS-hosted pages while everything else at ourdomain.com goes to our current web site?

Yes you can do that :)

Just order your account under one of our domains. Then do a CNAME for forums.ourdomain.org (or whatever you like) to our domain. Be sure to open a ticket to let our staff know so they can update our servers to accept your subdomain.

Can I have multiple subdomains and have them point to specific applications within the hosted suite?

For example, can a user type forums.mysite.com and open the Forums application and another user type downloads.mysite.com and open the Downloads application?

As well if you know the IP of the server you are on, you can also just setup a cname of www.yourdomain.com , and an a record. Of course if IPS has server problems and has to move you to another server and for some reason does not port the IPs to the new one.  Than your site will be down until you get the new IP + the time to dns replication (setting your TTL to 60-120 will help a lot but will put additional load on your DNS server if its not clustered
