Funnily enough, I just received an unsolicited private message on this forum.

I see you may be looking to get an IPB License. I am currently looking to sell mine to convert my forums back to vBulletin. If you are interested I could sell you mind for a discounted price. Here is a post from a different site in which I'm trying to sell it:

It went on and there was more information....blah blah blah

This is the reason that I am looking for forum software in the first place. Is there anyway that Private Messages can be allowed on a per user basis and un-allowed for certain users or groups?

What are the best suggestions for stopping or stemming this type of behaviour from people?

Case in point....2 x vendors existing on a forum. 1 x vendor targeting new people to the forum by spamming Private Messaging, can PM's be unknowingly moderated? Is there a way for the forum owner to view private messages that may be suspicious?

I would be interested to know, any help would be appreciated.

(As an aside, if you report the PM you received we're happy to deal with it)

You can enable and disable PMs on a per-group and per-member basis, yes.  If someone abuses their PM privileges, you can take them away using tools available in the software.

You cannot moderate PMs, however if a member uses the "report" button in a PM, moderators can add themselves to the conversation (and the message you report will be displayed in the report center for moderators to see without adding themself to the PM).

We do not offer a built-in tool to view private messages, however (1) if you know the database structure, you can do this via the SQL toolbox, and (2) there are hooks/mods available that add this functionality.

If it sounds like fun, it's not allowed on the bus!

How about the user blocking the other user?

Sure if the user decides to do that....this is more about a hypothetical vBulletin staff member with an account here that is Private Messaging n00bs and saying "dont buy with invision, buy with vBulletin cause its better"

If you get my gist.....it is only when a n00b points out that they were contacted by the vBulletin rep that Invision knows about it

Hypothetically speaking of course

I disagree completely, for me, it's the other way around. IPB is much better. :)
