Is it possible to prevent guests from viewing member profiles?

Yes there is a built in option to show / hide member profiles from any group, it also includes viewing the member list too. 
Most boards will just use this for the "guest" group to prevent guests from viewing member profiles.

Thanks, Andy. I just stumbled upon it in the demo:
- Member Groups > Manage Member Groups > Guests > Global
