Hello,

I'd like an option to update the forum without any FTP access. I know it's possible, for instance, the dotclear blog can be updated "online".

At least, that could be useful for small files (the langage pack, for instance).


I don't have internet at home and I don't want it, and there aren't FTP access in the bibliotheques.

That's why I'd like this option.

You can use the Auto-Upgrade feature in your Client Area. Just enter your FTP details, and IPS' system will do it all for you.

Yes for one or two files, it's possible to use cpanel, true.


However in this case, I've got a problem with hostagor, it seems to be impossible to connect to cpanel through a proxy.

Time you found a new host. Keeping a forum up and running requires ftp access. Perhaps you should host with IPS?

This is a very bad idea because it opens up your site and your forums to hackers exploiting vulnerabilities. I'm not sure this is a great idea to have for the forum software. While I'm all for making the software easier to use, I'm not sure it's a good idea for administrative functions such as software upgrading and the like.

I never had issues hosting an IP.Board forum with HostGator (until it grew too large for their limits, but that's another story entirely).

First of all, action-reaction, it sounds like you're trying to update the language pack. That's stored in the database, and not in any particular file or set of files. You can download a language pack as an XML file and import it into your database through your board's ACP.

Second, if you have cPanel access, it's very easy to upgrade your board or any add-on applications with a single file upload. Download the IP.Board zip file from your client area, unzip it, and put the contents of the "upload" folder into another zip file. If you want to upgrade any applications, just add the contents of their "upload" folders to the same zip file. Then upload that file to your webroot (usually the public_html folder) and unzip it using the cPanel file manager. Once you've done that, hop into the ACP and run the upgrade as usual. Be sure to delete the zip file from your webroot once you're done.

This method is actually faster than FTP in my experience because uploading a single file takes much less time than several thousand, due to the small overhead involved in every single file's transfer. I usually run upgrades this way myself, even though I have no trouble using FTP or SFTP.

Well, I host my website with HostGator and I haven't had any issues with their service. The only time they make an issue is if you're abusing their system resources or you're consuminig too much memory. They recently upgraded their servers with additional memory, about a year or two ago and I noticed most of my problems with server loads went away.

But, I think the OP is looking for a way to be able to simply point and click without logging into his or her account and have it done automatically with no uploading. Simply doing that without FTP or direct uploading to your account server is just not a very good idea. It really will open you up to potential headaches. I can't think of a single webhost provider that allows this because it opens your website up for potential hackers.

When I need an upgrade, I simply put in a support ticket and IPS Support handles my upgrades via FTP. You want to limit how much control you hand out to anyone and I just see potential red flags when you start asking anyone on an easier way to upgrade your software without FTP or Cpanel. Not unless you custom create your own login tools but that also requires some form of uploading.

I'm fine with hostgator. Yes I'd like to host my website with IPS, it's more coherent, but the price is very much more expensive.
