For users who download digital content, I'd like to track it somehow. In case I hear a song that I (or another user) produced being used commercially, I'd like to verify the license based on a number that links to the user who downloaded that file. So each number issued should be a directly relationship to the user and the file. Downloader should not generate multiple keys for 1 users downloading the file again.

I need the serial numbers to be taken from a list.

This is a must for some digital files.

Even if its just HEX format 10 or more characters long. As long as it's unique. If someone is really interested in writing the code, PM me as I can do deeper on how to have enough "headroom" to keep the number unique across mass users x downloads by doubling/coupling the hex as:


|fileHex| + |userHex|

or

|fileHex| + |downloadCountHex|.



By '+' I mean printing the the value one-after-the-other with no spaceing. Seem easier to decipher than using mathematical addition.

How exactly do you hope to access this serial? Will it be in the filename, or do you expect it to be digitally embedded in the content somehow?

If you are talking about issuing keys for insertion (like unlock codes) SULK is what you want.

That seems to be the aim for this one like fixedvalue + !serial! + .mp3

Thought that would be mega easy to circumvent once people are aware of it.

Steganography would be the way to do it, I have done similar things for people with aMember for digital security but using IP.Downloads would not like to try ... it could be possible in IP.Nexus by providing a link inside the client area where they download the thingy and the file is cooked before download.

I think its best embedded/generated in a text file. To be included with the download or sent in email confirmation . It is up to the downloader to maintain the document as proof-of-purchase. For the admin, maybe a log can be generated to maintain all numbers. This long can be a single text file the appends a line for each download ID and the user ID on the same line.
