I've read that when I've purchased IPB, I'm allowed to install it on one site, then move it once a year (or something like that). Does that also apply to the test install? I'd like to put my test install on site A until it's all running the way I want, then put my live install on site B, reinstall test on site C and remove it from A. No issues with doing that?

When I run the conversion of my forum data from the old forum (Xoops) to the test IPB one, do the databases have to be on the same server?

If I convert the data from my live site, is there any risk of the live site being messed up as a result?
What are the risks if I don't switch off my live site first? Is someone posting something that won't come across the worst that can happen?

Its the URL that you have to change in the Client Area. There may be a charge if its changed too often, that's all. Obviously a typo is not a problem although we have had cases where some would want to change their URL every couple of weeks.

The test install should not really move ideally unless the *main* live site does too, this really only applies if you put the licence key into the test install though, it will function without it with a few things inoperative, although for a hidden private test site these may not be relevant. I'd just ensure your test board is in a pass protected directory and / or has public viewing / registration disabled.

I think they do have to be on the same server, although I've not checked to see if it permits a remote connection. It would be slightly quicker to import the data. I think its standard practise in most cases to have the source data and IPB on the same box though, certainly makes things a bit easier as you don't have to worry about connectivity issues with remote connections to mysql.

There should not really be any risk as the converter will only read the source data it should not change it in any way at all, although a full backup is recommended anyway before doing this operation.

Thanks Andy. Is there a list of what will be inoperative until the licence key is put in?

Mainly the spam service, the visual skin generator and IP.Chat. :)

On a private test installation, you'd have no need for the spam service simply as no one would be registering. The only reason for wanting Chat to function on a private test board is if you were writing a hook or perhaps skinning it I'd guess.

Yep, I can probably get by without those for a little while. Thank you :)
