You didn't tell us what forum software you are currently using, so I can't provide specifics, however general information regarding what we can and cannot convert is located here:

Do you have access to your database to make a backup? Because from what I have seen those free preinstall forums do not allow it.

Anyway, if you do have access to the database and the server space, first purchase Ipb then install it at your server space in the same database as that of your current forum and then you convert it to Ipb by using the converter package provided above. There is a read me file with detailed instrunctions inside the converter package. You might want to read it.

freeforums.org looks like one of those "free unlimited everything" forum hosts that does what it says on the tin, but tries to lock you in to their system so that they can continue to make money off of your community as long as it stays with them. To move anywhere at all, you're going to need to get your hands on your site's database. Some free forum hosts let you just have it, some will charge you a fee to download it, but most don't give you any access to it at all.

Searching through their site, I came across this topic where someone specifically asked to be given access to their database: http://support.freef...p?f=21&t=102863

It looks like you can get it by signing up for their "Advanced Hosting" product, which entails signing up for a HostGator account through their referral link and asking to have your forum transferred to it. Once that's done, you could stay on your new package with HostGator and purchase your own IP.Board license to install on it (or you could use any other host as well - moving between hosts is very easy once you have access to all of your data); or you can get a hosted community with IPS starting at $10/month. You should be able to import your database into IP.Board either way, as the converters support phpBB 3. IPS will be willing to help you out with this part once you purchase either a license or a hosted community.

Although a little cumbersome, that seems to be freeforums.org's preferred method of handing over your data. You may want to get in touch with them personally to see if they can offer you any other options.

Well, if you asked freeforums.org if you get your database/files/etc.

Then they give you your forum,
then just convert to IPB the normal way on a normal host..

Once you a purchase a license you can download the conversion package for free. But if you can not do the conversion yourself and you are going to hire someone else to do it for you, then it will depend on how much that person is going to charge you.

Its a question of getting the database from where you are, then using the Converter application to 'convert' it over. Its quite easy to use and we do have a forum area here for those who have problems or just need assistance / advice with their conversion.

Hello,

We offer both a hosted plan - http://www.invisionp...ect_package.php and a self-hosted option - http://www.invisionpower.com/store/

You can see a comparison between hosted and self-hosted at http://www.invisionp...equirements.php

Details of the components that make up our suite can be found at http://www.invisionpower.com/suite/

You could in theory purchase both as this would enable you to have unencrypted software on our hosted plans, but you need only go for one or the other, depending upon where you wish to host your community.

If you can obtain a full backup, I recommend emailing [email protected] to help you determine the best route forward (self-hosted license, or a hosted plan) and to get started. :)
