Gallery 5 is a massive improvement but the way you can sort member's images is not logical or intuitive. Here's what I'm talking about:

Attached File  imagesorting.png   169.61KB   18 downloads

Clicking on "Album name" the albums are sorted Z to A i.e. descending. In my opinion it should be ascending. No where is it obvious that clicking again changes it to ascending.

Latest image which is the default that you get when you first navigate to the members gallery shows the oldest uploaded images first. Worse, if you have a whole lot of empty albums, it can be a number of pages before you actually get to some images. You can see this here in IPS's own gallery. Again, clicking on "Latest image" reverses the order and you get the latest images first. Next time you visit the gallery the sort option is remembered so I assume a cookie is used but it should be right first time around.

Highest rating - hallelujah, one that seems to work right

Clicking on "Most images" first time around gives you the least images first. Again if there are albums with no images you get a whole lot of blurry placeholders. Again if you know that clicking on the Most images link again you'll change the sort and actually get something useful. Bizarre!! What appears to happen once you get the sort order right for this one is a cookie is stored on your computer. When you come back to the gallery and click on "Most images" you'll get the correct descending order.

Click on "Most Comments". Same as "Most images". You get the images with the least amount of comments first the very first time you click on this sort option.

The following needs to be changed:

Alter the initial result to the most logical i.e. either ascending or descending for that particular sort option.

Instead of clicking on the sort option again, actually have an "Ascending" and "Descending" link or a toggle between the 2 states. Unless you're the developer of the gallery you wouldn't know or think to click on the sort option to change it. It needs to be clear for casual users (and not so casual users).

You control the default sort order, and as of Gallery 5 FINAL, we added an icon there to indicate this.

Looks like your custom skin may need to be updated?

Latest image which is the default that you get when you first navigate to the members gallery shows the oldest uploaded images first. What happens is, if the current page is DESC, clicking any option will show that option in ASC order. Clicking it again toggles back and forth (desc, asc, desc, and so on).

So if you are looking at latest image ASC, then click album name, it will show album name DESC. Clicking latest image will toggle back to ASC.

One option would be to retain the current *order* when you change over to a different sort method. e.g. you are looking at album name ASC. When clicking on latest image, it will toggle to DESC presently, but we could instead retain the current ASC and just change the sort method. This sounds like it's more what you are expecting?

See above for a description of what is really happening. Once you understand, I'm sure you'll see the logic behind what is happening, but I'm open to suggestions, surely. :)

Ok I get the arrows now. I had to revert a skin template. Must have been a change since the previous Beta version i was using.

Yes, I added that between the last beta and final based on feedback.

I'm still open to any other ideas to simplify those options. :)

See, I do try to listen.

Now now don't make this about you. I clearly give amazing feedback. :D

Thanks.

I'm still open to any other ideas to simplify those options.

The arrow messed up the filter bar though because the active filter isn't a new background color anymore. Should've done the image route like Thumbnail/Large filters instead of CSS.

Just going to throw some ideas around for 3DKiwi.

Add the words "Sort By" to the left of the filters with the up and down arrows together. Kind of like the words "Show as". Change the filters from

Latest Image / Most Views / Highest Ratings / Most Comments / Image Caption

to

Date / Views / Ratings / Comments / Caption

I think you understand what I did there.

But, unfortunately a filter that says "Date" with an arrow pointing up isn't exactly that clear so I would add a tooltip saying "Showing Oldest Image First". For views it would be "Showing least views first". But...that's more work than it's worth I guess.

At the very least I think the arrow direction changing on hover ought to be removed. It's confusing me..especially when you click on a filter, the page refreshes, you move your arrow off the filter and it changes, there's a "wait what?" kind of moment there...

Uh, not at all. Why does one slightly unclear feature completely overshadow the vast amount of new features, enhancements, style updates, and overall improvments of Gallery 5?

I agree. Gallery 5 is a massive improvement and browsing member albums / images just needs a bit of fine tuning. The arrows that I'm now getting are better but still not ideal. I'd rather have a "Sort Ascending" and "Sort Descending" button that's obvious what it does. The arrows are not obvious and don't appear until you click on one of the sort options.

I agree with changing wording to be "Date / Views / Ratings / Comments / Caption". Makes sense to me.

Things are still not right. For example I've just gone to IPS's own gallery and clicked on Member Albums. The page I get has empty albums. I should be getting latest images (by album) in descending order. The impression could be taken that no members have any images.

Why does it even sort by caption?

Every single bug you submitted during the beta releases was fixed I must say. Oh wait....

Like I said, I'm still open to tweaking things. :)

For 5.0.1 it will hide empty albums in the category listings. You can still view them from your user profile, when you go to upload, from your user Gallery page (the page in Gallery that shows all of a user's images and albums) and from search, so I think this will help things a little. Note that our sort direction isn't set properly on our Member's Gallery here (so it's a bad example to look at) - I'll fix that shortly (just have to reconfigure the category in the ACP to set a proper sort order).

If the consensus is that removing the changing direction image on hover would be clearer, I'm happy to do that. We can also explore separating out the sort direction to a separate button if the consensus is again that this is clearest.

So do I. Not as clever as the arrows we have now but more user friendly and obvious what they do.
