So I'm experiencing some extreme growing pains as my SMF forum has grown to over 25,000 members with an average of 800 users online.
Needless to say that level of growth has caused me to upgrade my hosting every couple of months. Thus I am looking for information about resource usage and I also like the IP.nexus idea as I have several members that would love to pay to advertise their own threads on the main forums.
1. With the number of users above, what sort of server specs do I need to be looking at?
2. Would the resource usage go down moving from SMF to IPB (assume I'm not using any package addons on SMF)?
3. Any other thoughts about my situation?
I appreciate everyone's time!

1) This is extremely difficult to gauge. I can say that we routine have around 800 users online and we use a single dedicated server last I recall. If you email [email protected], you might be able to get some more specific guidance, or alternatively you may wish to consider our hosting plans which we guarantee to perform well based on the tier you choose.
2) This, too, is difficult to answer. There are so many combinations of settings, addons, options, etc. that affect things greatly. I can say that IP.Board development focuses strongly on resource usage - it is very important to us, as you can imagine, since we also host the software.
3) IP.Board includes support for sphinx searching (which provides very fast searching when you have a lot of data), CDN usage for images/css/javascript, alternate cache engines (memcache, APC, xcache, etc.), and other great resource-saving features.

I used, and liked, SMF for some time. still help some friends run some stuff with it too.
ip has more base features but when smf set to mirror the features the resource usage, for me, was pretty evenly matched.
the kicker for me was ip.content and its integration, smf cannot really match it with its portal pages and smf does not offer the support level you get here.
smf is a fine product, lot of permissions and post deletion (controlled granular forum cleanups) setup I like better, but IP's benefits outweigh smf benefits to me.
