So, anyone who's seen my other thread http://community.inv...opinion-please/ will know i'm currently weighing up IPB and XF so I thought it's about time I got to grips with the demo's.

For those that did take a read, you'll know I am a COMPLETE novice to all of this - Microsoft Office is pretty much as far as I go with computers!

So, to get me started with the basics: what can/cant I do with this demo account?

PS Mods - please get this msg approved asap so I can ask some 'live' questions instead of the delay I was experiencing over on my other thread, it's a terrible image to give off to potential new customers you know...

The demos are to give you an idea about the product. So you can see how that products looks snf feels like from admin and user end.

Regarding to choose between Ipb and xenforo, I would advice you, if I may, to go with Ipb. xenforo is a dead project and it has no future. You do not have to take my word on it. You can look it up at their own forum to see all the drama there or read about it in other third party admin forums.

Please do not ask me in private to provide free support for you. If you want to make use of my time and expertise then you will have to pay for them.

In a demo installation you can't obviously install any styles & modifications or anything that requires file system access. That is like in other demos for other forum software so there is no difference. If you already have the demo in front of you, I suggest starting using it and look around. Once you have any questions, I am sure somebody can jump in and help.

Five days. :)

If you did require it to be extended (I believe this is possible) its important to contact sales in advance for this as the system will otherwise automatically remove them as they reach their time limit.

Ok, better contact them now then as it's been live for a few days but haven't really done anything with it.

A few questions for anyone that will:

1) Notifications: i'd like members to be notified if their posts are quoted, they receive a like and if they're @tagged mentioned but I see only the 'likes' works automatically. Can the other two be achieved?

2) Do notifications come with a sound? I cant confirm this at present as I have no sound on my office PC - very annoying!

3) Hover/preview topics and/or notifications: is there anything built into the latest release for this or would I have to look towards the marketplace?

4) Custom skins: what's an average price for one?

There will be more....

2) No, there is no sound notifications unfortunately built in.

3) In order to preview a post in IPB you have to click the arrow that appears on-hover.Posted Image

1) Quoted: Yes, stock.... Like: Yes, stock... @tagged: Yes, not stock, but there is a mod for that.
To set notification defaults: ACP > Members > Members > Notification Defaults
To set your notifications: Your profile > Edit Settings > Notifications

2) No, they don't have a sound. You might be able to hook one in... There is also a modfor notifications to display without a browser refresh

3) Topic preview is on the forum index, where you see the list of topics in a forum, there is a little button just to the left of the statistics that allows you to expand and show the first post, first unread post, and last post. There is also a mod that allows you to hover over topics and see the same information.

4) Many are free, some pre-made are $10-$15, some around $25 - $30... Contracting custom work for your board specifically would be more than that depending on what you wanted done...

That I know of, you can have notifications with a sound but it isn't automatic. You'd have to look through the settings in the Admin CP yourself. If it isn't there, then maybe a hack/mod can add that for you.

If they "follow this topic" they will be notified of everything, but you can also set that in the Admin CP.

Like pother people have said, you'd have to look around yourself for these answers. If you did, you'd answer all of your questions.

Thanks for that, i'd actually found the notifications and those mods after posting.

I'd quite like to see a forum in action with the hover/preview hook in use - anyone know of any?

As for a skin, it'd be a custom one most likely but no idea what we'd want exactly yet. Are we talking mega bucks?

Different skinners charge different amounts, so it's hard to answer. You can try to contact some of the skinners listed in our custom services directory.

Ok, thanks.

I might as well keep my general questions tidy in here for now instead of starting new threads...

Q) re the top menu bar where it says forums/members/blogs etc (not sure of the correct term?) - is it possible to 'freeze' that so it's always on view even when you scroll down? Like on Facebook for instance...

With enough knowledge of HMTL / CSS or a custom skin design, yes.

As indicated, that's just a CSS trick, and it's possible so long as you know what CSS to use (hint, you need to add position:fixed to the appropriate selector to have an item stay fixed on the screen - though you may find a javascript implementation to work smoother if you are familiar with javascript).

Yes (at least from our side). I believe they give you a few files you have to upload, which is fine on our hosting.
