#2155461 Dates should be localised

Posted Arnie on 17 August 2011 - 04:13 AM

We run a UK board, so it'd be nice if we had the option for all date acronyms in the boards to follow the European format of DD/MM/YYYY when the board is localised.

I know it's a minor niggle but this happens in quite a few places across the board (example attached from [forum]index.php?app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=new_post)

#2138502 CKE Editor and why?

Posted Ryan H. on 23 July 2011 - 02:33 PM

The editor is a sufficiently broad project to be a package in its own right [and often is: see F/CKE, TinyMCE, ...]. I don't know about your site, but the rich-text editor has never worked very well for us in the first place. Whenever a person posts with some problem about posts turning to HTML, or things not showing up right, or I can't remember what other issues, our response is invariably "disable RTE", and invariably that solves the problem. Is this somehow unique to us?

I'm not sure what "all the bugs" with the editor are in 3.2--I see at most 9 of limited scope in the tracker and I've never run into one myself--but it's certainly an improvement from all the quirks the old one had, and it means IPS doesn't need to spend unnecessary resources trying to iron out those issues themselves.

#2109743 3.2 Posting Options - Post as DRAFT

Posted 3DKiwi on 10 May 2011 - 12:34 AM

I would like this as well. Great for setting up a contest that starts at a particular date and time. My site has fortnightly challenges starting at 8.00 p.m. Saturday night. Having this option would mean I wouldn't need to be around to make the topic visible.

#2120625 Online Images

Does the user being online or offline impact how you reply to the topic? I don't see how it does especially when you also allow users to login anonymously meaning they will always show offline.

The point of a forum, as opposed to a chat room, is that you don't have to be "online" to participate in a conversation. For example, I am often online but not on our forums here. Yet if someone posts a reply to a topic I am tracking I get an email and instantly read the topic. I would not want someone choosing not to post because the little indicator next to me name shows offline.

To summarize: the online indicator on a forum is misleading to the average user. The average user does not understand that, unlike your instant messenger application, the user could have signed off 15 minutes before and it would still show them online. So, in the end, the online indicator is not really telling you what you think it is nor is it bringing any useful information to you that will impact how you interact with the topics.

Are they really though?  (Yes, I'm asking this sincerely).

I personally never pay attention to whether someone is online or offline or not.  I don't find online status (again, personally) to be very important when participating on a forum.  It's different, to me, when you are on a social networking site, but replying to a topic I don't typically care if the user is online or not.

Not sure what you mean by a forklift - apart from a machine to lift up pallets.

#2119209 License key warning on localhost

Posted Michael on 07 June 2011 - 04:27 PM

I run some development boards on my localhost machine, and one thing that's always been kind of annoying is that they nag me for the license key.  On 3.2 this nag has gotten significantly more in-your-face.  Would it be possible to block these nags when the board URL is something like http://localhost/ or http://localhost:*?

For folks running just Apache they'd have URLs that are just http://localhost/whatever, but if you run both Apache and IIS like I do your URLs might have the port number in them.  Mine are all something like http://localhost:8080/whatever/.

#2085861 Feature Request - Option to force users to agree to rule updates

Posted Jinkler on 02 March 2011 - 03:06 AM

If you update your rules, which most comptetent webmasters should do, to reflect changing laws and emerging trends etc, there is no way to force all members to read and agree if they wish to continue using the site. This should be built into the software, otherwise, depending on the site you run, you can be left wide open to all sorts of legal problems.

#2117529 'Go to the first unread post'

Posted Vince0789 on 04 June 2011 - 05:25 PM

Hello

3.2 is looking absolutely great so far. Just one more point of annoyance. I noticed that topic titles get cut off more often that not on the board index. Hovering over these links now just pops up the 'Go to the first unread post' message. I for one find it quite annoying to not be able to read the topic title in its entirety. Perhaps this feature could be brought back?

Sincerely

I notice that no one of you come from Germany and have a idea of the German situation with the privacy policy.

Absolutely not! But we can handle it easily: If I get problems with a lawyer, I am sending this to you - then you will see the problem(s) in germany...
Yeah, good luck with that, bud.  Even if you did ever get police on your case, you can't just direct them to the software vendor.

And believe me, i'm not happy with the situation in Germany!!!

And answers from lawyers i've given up already at starting this topic.

Also its not so easy to get the permission to save members IP adresses during the registration, because also IP adresses from guest saved, so you must get the permission to save a IP adress BEFORE a user can access the community.
No, it doesn't.  An IP is only saved by IP.Board if you register or post, so you might want to check your statements.  Although, since Apache is logging IP addresses, you'd best turn off your web server now before the authorities bash down your door for the heinous crime of leaving httpd logging enabled.

But its okay, you (from US/UK) have your own view about that (and I would hope it was so easy in germany) and so we must hope no member ever will make trouble about that.
Oh, quit being melodramatic.  No issue exists here.

#2117362 Saving IP-Addresses: Option to disable it!

Posted Charles on 04 June 2011 - 10:22 AM

I know of no country that considers an IP address personal information. There are several reasons for this:
  • It's not personally identifiable.
  • You cannot even connect to a server without sending your IP - kind of the basic of the Internet there.
  • Even if our software stopped logging IPs, your web server still would so what do you gain?
I think you are creating an issue where none exists.

#2116020 Welcome to IP.Board 3.2.0!

Posted IPS News on 02 June 2011 - 10:01 AM

We have upgraded the IPS Community to IP.Board 3.2.0!

This is the first step in the testing process for IP.Board 3.2.0's upcoming release. We will be testing the new version here for several weeks and working on fixing issues with the goal of our first public beta release being as stable as it can be.

Please look around and help us in testing by submitting reports to our bug tracker so we can all work together to create a stable release. Keep in mind that our applications - IP.Gallery, IP.Blog, IP.Calendar, IP.Chat, IP.Downloads, and IP.Content - have also all been updated to be compatible with IP.Board 3.2 so please also test those. Your help is greatly appreciated!

You may wish to review the What's New in IP.Board 3.2 topic for information on the exciting changes in IP.Board 3.2.

Downloading IP.Board 3.2.0

IP.Board 3.2.0 is not yet available for download.

We are using it here on our company forums both as a preview for feedback and to identify any possible issues before release. Before a final release we will be testing it here on our company forums for a few weeks and then posting betas for download for all active license holders and invite you to participate in the beta testing process when we reach that milestone. When the final, supported release is made available we will make an announcement here.

#2113454 Is it possible to add the feature to disallow access to a select forum?

Posted Web ◕‿◕ Developer on 23 May 2011 - 11:53 PM

IP.Board currently can't do the following:

Let's say you have 10 different user groups and each has access to forum X. 2 members are misbehaving in forum X and you want to disallow them access. The only way to do this is to move them to a special group. However, this isn't really economical / feasible / recommended. It can get complicated if more forums are to be restricted. For example, member 1 is disallowed into forum X and forum Y and member 2 is disallowed access to forum Z. The best way to do this is to have selective "forum banning" per member. This would be available after clicking on "edit member"

#2113259 Screenshot thumbnails

Posted ΑndyF on 23 May 2011 - 04:24 AM

The thumbnails are a little bit too small especially on an edit where you wish to choose one as the primary screenshot to use for the file. :)

Although it does not sound much, if the images are reasonably similar it can be difficult to pick out the one you wanted to use as they look almost the same at their much reduced dimensions.

The 'Default thumbnail dimensions' setting only appears to take into account the file listing itself not the mini ones alongside.

#2023366 Tags again

Posted Ditchmonkey on 27 September 2010 - 03:45 PM

We are getting all these announcements about product "improvements" and still no mention of a tags system. Tags have been asked for numerous times by many members and really should be a standard feature in a modern piece of software like this.

Are we going to get tags in the next 6 months?
