#2254778 Comment Notifications, put it in the core.

Posted Marcher Technologies on 14 April 2012 - 06:52 PM

http://community.inv...s/#entry2254741
In making this rant, I realized something.
The issue is this: applications must implement their notifications for comments individually, which leaves a large separation in functionality in many cases.
I propose that if an application uses the comments controller and "Follow", instead of the application opting IN to comment notifications with its own separate code, do reverse, tie it down to the comments controller all apps use and force it to be an opt-out instead, where if desired, the application author could opt-out, for none, or a customized notify preference/return(yes, I am remembering the complexities of Content here, an over-ride for the notification content is quite vital), but would not have to implement anything to make use of it beyond the comments API/like class.
This would also facilitate Comment Notifications in the official apps without much effort once implemented.
I do not know of the rest, but I am simply tired of following items not of the forum application for literally no reason/benefit.

#2225558 IP.Board SEO Paging Issue

Posted realmaverickuk on 27 January 2012 - 08:30 PM

From an SEO indexing perspective, the simple default pagination on IP.Board is pretty bad. Especially for larger boards.

Google deems content less and less important, the deeper in to the website it is. The more clicks it takes to get to a piece of content, the deeper it is classed and thus the more difficult it will be to rank.

By having limited paging options, it takes more clicks to get to older posts, than it would if there were say 1-10 paging.

The bigger the forum, the most of an issue this will be.

I recommend those of you who run big forums, alter your paging to show 1-5 or 1-10 and your forum will be better indexed and traffic will likely increase.

I was hoping this was going to be included in the 3.3 SEO update, but it appears not as IPB is currently running 3.3. Perhaps it's something that could be added before the final release?

I have lots of data to backup my theory if anybody is interested.

Thanks for reading.

#2219738 Suggestion IP.Gallery 4.x.x - Let users 'move' their images

Posted 3DKiwi on 11 January 2012 - 07:19 PM

Just a matter of giving us more permission options so those of us who do want to allow members to move images around their own albums can do so and those like Gerry can disable it.

#2204679 Hook to delete empty albums after [x] days

I've made a hook for this to prune empty blogs.

I'll try to make it to work on Gallery.

#1967459 PLEASE make a tab system

Posted qscott86 on 08 June 2010 - 06:57 PM

I think IBP desperately needs an easy way to create custom navigation tabs from the ACP... it is far too difficult going through the skin and also editing the code that makes tabs appear "active" when clicked... custom tabs should be easy to create on IBP.  They also should allow re-ordering any tab (right now, you can't re-order ips add-ons ahead of root applications, etc).

#2202338 Gallery 4.2.0 - Browsing member's Gallery is a disaster

I am sorry but despite being told the Admin Control Panel would be brought back, it has not, the logistics of the album now is an absolute nightmare.  We waited all this time for nothing, thank you. I bought my Gallery software not my members, yet it seems my members have full control of my software, when it should be the other way round.

All I can say now is that none of my regiments software will be renewed, and being constructive what direction is IPS taking, as I, and I am sure many others reading through many of the threads on this forum are so disappointed with the direction being taken.

I know we on this forum are only about 5 or 6% of your clientèle, and therefore its easy to say sod it, they are a very small minority, and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.  We cant even vote with our pockets because it would not even make a dent, we just have to live with it or buy elsewhere.

The thing that gets me though is despite a long talk with a member of IPS before my eye operation 7 weeks ago, none of my concerns have been addressed.  I am keeping this constructive, I don't want a flame war, I am just expressing my opinion, I am now going to have to install another Gallery and move all my photographs over to it. Shame because the Gallery used to be brilliant, if not the best at one time.
The sentence in bold spells it out.
Admins have little to no control of how the gallery looks and functions........
Quite the downer when its our money, and not the members going into this script...
And before its stated... yes, im certain i could rampage on the template to add basic items like the album author, and hooks for filtering and sorting....
Not really the point.

#2195050 The Next IPB 4 Should Be Done Using Flash / AIR

Posted .time on 11 November 2011 - 11:03 PM

Sounds great. I love not being able to bookmark URLs, and losing all my search engine and mobile traffic.

Edit: 8%? That's BS. Flash is dead, and it ain't reviving for IPB4.

#2187348 replace image rating by the like system

Posted Feld0 on 26 October 2011 - 12:02 AM

+1.

There's a like button in the comments, so why not a like button on the images themselves? To top it off, a list should be added to the UCP of your liked images (or even all of your liked content), so you can go back and see your favourite ones anytime.

#2171833 Topic Ratings - what are they good for?

Alternatively, the option to have topics rated by total reputation points given within it, or average per post, would make sense.
I really like this idea.

#2103287 IPB.Board 3.2 - 1st post attachment topic preview

I would suggest that 99% of our topics have no attachment in the first post here.  I would further extrapolate that most sites are in a similar scenario (this is forum software, after all).  I think it would look ugly in real world usage where 9/10 topics are just an empty box "no preview image" or something.
No, just put a conditional on it and don't show anything there if there is no image.

We have a couple specific forums in which members share photos and write ups of their projects.  A very heavy percentage of the topics in those forums do indeed have images in the OP, it's kind of the point.  Don't dismiss how much more of a role images have in conversations on the web now. :)  Many people have been trained by facebook  and are starting to use their smartphone more and more to take quick shots and upload them for their friends to see exactly what they are talking about in their topic.

Maybe having a hook that provides access to the first attached image (jpg, gif, png etc) would be helpful?  It would certainly be VERY helpful to be able to grab that image as a default when promoting a topic to an IP.C article. ;)

#2151942 Custom forum icons as a default option (in 3.2.0)?

Posted cheatmaster30 on 11 August 2011 - 05:50 PM

Really, this feature has been available as a modification for nearly every forum script on the market since modifications began, yet only one of them (vBulletin, and they added it badly) actually put the thing in the default software.  It wouldn't be too hard to code in, and it'd work quite well if it was as simple as the version DawPi made

Just have it so with each forum you add, you get an option to add the URL of an icon to replace the default posts/new posts one on the forum index, and voila, one easy feature that would enhance a ton of forums and make IPB look so much more modern (a lot of modern, somewhat stylish forums use this, as do large forums like Gaia Online).

#2149250 Features removed from 3.1.4

Where do you take your statistics from? For me and a lot of users I know are more encouraged to reply to a topic if they know that one of the participated posters is online. We are in the world of "real time" and speed, now. Users tend to stay online at our board when they see that their friends are also there.

After all I am not buying that you have removed that feature because nobody really needs it. It must have been a "speed" reason, because I can not think of another valid reason.

Agreed!

My members are from all over the world just like this forum & our membership is like a family where we love chatting & having discussions with each other, it was always good to post in a topic when we saw the latest posters had that little green online symbol, now we can't tell without either clicking on their ID & bringing up their profile or checking the online list.

Who is responsible for making these decisions? why remove something that served a purpose? this is another thing that could have been left with an option in Admin so the people who spend money on this software can decide for themselves whether the feature is useful or not.

we can turn on or off reputaions etc so why remove options from us?

many of us have paid Hundreds of dollars towards purchasing & maintaining our forums yet silly things like removing features that some of us use really is annoying & makes us wonder why we bother in the first place. should never remove features that people have used for years, should always have the option in Admin for people to enable or disable if you feel it bloats the software

otherwise release a stand alone board & then release official hooks for free for us to use that will work correctly

Is this feature going to make it into 3.2?

I hope so. I would really hate this to turn into just another hook as I keep hearing when they feel this feature "isn't necessary".  This is necessary IMO. If not by default, at least as an option in the ACP.
