I have known it, yes.

It is not guaranteed though.

Seems a bit crazy that pre-existing members who have purchased in the past have to have their renewals approved!
I second this.

#2178881 What is the reasoning for hiding so many IPB icons?

Posted bfarber on 05 October 2011 - 01:17 PM

Since you asked the reason it was done, I can give you that.  You can then debate whether it's valid or should be changed afterwards. :)

The reason a lot of these options were hidden was because in 3.1 and below we wound up with so many features that there were hundreds of icons and buttons and links on every single page.  It overwhelms new users - they load a topic or a forum listing and there are literally just so many options they don't know where to start or what they all do.  To improve this experience, we have hidden options that are not always necessary and made them context sensitive.  For instance, when you mouse over a topic row in the forum listing you will see the mod options button and the topic preview, but it's hidden when you are not moused over the row.  It cleans up the interface dramatically for new users who are simply browsing the site.

Now, like I said, you are free to discuss further whether you think the change is for the better or worse.

They answer tickets and such on weekends, so they most likely verify purchases too.

Support is 24/7, sales / billing are not. However a member of Management / Billing is highly likely to be around to check any pending orders anyway, so its quite possible it may be approved soon.

#2160621 Upgrade question

You can just upgrade Board and Gallery. However, The older version of Content likely won't be compatible with the new version of the Board, so you may need to disable it.

#2073960 So far, disappointed by how far Gallery 4 misses the mark

Posted Tigratrus on 28 January 2011 - 06:17 PM

Matt's statement in his Gallery Blog Manifest post:

Quote

Revolution
The "truth" of the application is very simple:

Upload some media into an album
View, discuss and share that media.

pretty much nailed my feelings, I totally agree with that goal, it should be dead easy to just upload images and share them. That's what the members want to do, and for the external social media, it seems to do that quite well...

BUT

Why does IP.Gallery 4.0 seem to almost ignore the ability to readily share IP.Gallery Images WITHIN the IPB platform?!

Seriously... The expectation seems to to be that members will:

1. Be chatting in the forums on a topic.
2. Decide they want to show that friend an image (or several that they have uploaded at different times before).
3. Leave the forums and go to the gallery
4. Upload the image(s)
5. After they upload the image they have to click on it to bring up that image's details
6. Drop down the "Share Image" button. Don't even see this as an option for an album, though I'm sure Matt means it to be there based on his BBCode test thread.
7. Copy the BBCode for that image

STOP HERE TO CONSIDER

A large % of community users don't know what BBCode is. They wouldn't have a clue that they need to copy/paste that in order to put their image in a forum topic/post.

8. They have to go Back to the forum and start typing their reply to their friend.
9. Paste in the BBCode (that they probably didn't even know to copy, since they likely don't know BBCode or what it does) for the image IF they didn't forget and copy something else in the mean time, like a piece of text from their friend's post that they wanted to call out (many folks copy paste instead of using reply).  If they did copy something else they have to start over again digging into the Gallery, because it's not really easy to find your own images/albums at the moment.
10.Repeat steps 4 through 8 several more times to put in the other images they wanted to talk about (why not just use an album?  Well, maybe several pictures are already uploaded, that's VERY common in our current system, upload once and reuse them to make your point in your forum posts).
11.Hopefully our member was patient enough to go through all these steps, and didn't just throw up their hands and upload the images as attachments, and they can now *finally* submit their post.
12.  When the other members are reading the post, they are often trying to compare details in the images to what the image poster was talking about... Unfortunately, every time they click a linked image they leave the forums and can't see the rest of the post. :-(.

Do we REALLY think that many community members (keeping in mind that they're NOT forum admins and don't KNOW how to use all the features of the system, or what BBCode is) are actually going to go though all that?

So...

My question is: Why is uploading images and sharing them to Facebook, Twitter etc so much vastly easier than it is to upload them to IP.Gallery and share them within the IP.Board system itself?

What about integration with the forums, when will we be able to readily use images and albums in the gallery IN the forums to facilitate the conversation?

Having images added as attachments in forums posts because that's soooooo much easier than using the reusable, searchable images in the gallery... Well, as a community builder, I cry every time I see people upload a really good image as an attachment because I know it'll be buried in that thread and never show up in the search system, never be seen by anyone looking through the gallery for that sort of image. It's a nigh-criminal waste of sometimes priceless User Generated Content. With everyone carrying a smartphone, images are an ever increasing part of the conversation, and the gallery should be evolving to be more of a gestalt with the forums rather than a more or less separate, parallel system.

I really hope that this new release carries with it the ability to quickly and easily upload images to the gallery while in the forum post editor, and to use albums and images (via a quick popup that provides access to content you have uploaded to the gallery) in a forum post. It should be an easy, seamless experience. Images/media belong in the gallery not as attachments! :-)

Along the same lines, why is the commenting on images/albums happening in an isolated stove-piped environment?  Why can't we tie it into the community conversation happening in the forums topics the way we can with comments on Articles (IP.Content)?!  Shouldn't that be a major goal of integrating the IP apps?  Bringing that user interaction TOGETHER instead of fragmenting it into multiple different systems where it's rarely seen?  Shouldn't the goal be a community PLATFORM where everything ties in together, rather than separate parallel systems that share an authentication system?

In conclusion, I heartily support Matt's goals in reworking the Gallery, and much of it is looking wonderful! I greatly appreciate his efforts, and hope that he will read this feedback as what it is intended to be:

Constructive feedback intended to show how a bit of what appears to be "Curse of Knowledge" blindness, may be preventing an appreciation of how  IP.Gallery falls sort in a real world setting.  :) Of course, I may be totally wrong and Matt et al *totally* get the need for deeper integration, and we just haven't heard about how they are going to tackle it yet! ;)

#2068315 Suggestion: Nudge Feature

Posted CrossFire-Radio on 15 January 2011 - 03:43 PM

was actually talking about something like this to my g/f for our Forums just the other night lol... Said to her "Wouldn't it be fun if we had a "poke" feature on the forum?"  She said, "Yeah, that would be a good way to get them to come back and visit, cause they would get a message saying they got "poked" "

So having some kind of Mod or an addition "like" the FB Poke, would be fun!  So I give it a +1  :D

#2066923 Calendar in 3.2

Posted Christophe on 12 January 2011 - 02:41 PM

Two things I am looking forward in the 3.2 for the calendar app

1) A way to have different event colors in the same community calendar instead of having to create a new calendar and have different pages per calendar. ie you create an event and tag it as: EVENT and it goes let say green. then you create another event and you tag it as THEATER and it shows lets say as blue. One single calendar instead of different ones. You should also be able to sort and hide of course

2) A proper registration system for events. Something very simple where if you are authorized to create a RSVP you add a link/button to rsvp and select who will be able to see who is registered for that event. lets say you can only allow moderators and admins to see who is registered and members only see a button to register or unregister. I had a custom hook made for this but I feel it should be part of the default calendar

3) A way to add links to the calendar that are not full urls like /wordpress/event/110 as opposed to http://www.site.com/...press/event/110 which is crucial if you have to change the site URL going from a .net to .com for example without having to re edit all calendar events. Relative links in calendar please.

just my two cents

#2065459 test split

Posted Tanax on 09 January 2011 - 03:05 PM

It's funny how you see the social groups in vB as the "general" way of doing social groups.
Just because vB had a bad implementation of this feature doesn't mean that it's a bad feature. Think of groups in Facebook, it is widely used and often very interesting. I can definitely see this feature as a very good one, IPS just needs to think it through to get the maximal implementation.

#2038068 Make "view new content" behave as expected by users of phpBB or vB

While that is true, I don't think IPB will change just because vB does it differently.

IPB is not changing. This bug has been fixed once in a previous version and there is an existing provision for all users to select "show content that is unread" already.
All we are asking for is:

  • The bug to be fixed in 3.1.3 - which has been confirmed as a bug in the tracker
  • Admin to have the ability to select the default search options for all users (the users can change back if the need)

As it is, Matt is already planning to overhaul the VNS in 3.2 based on the suggestions being offered and the problems being experienced.

#2037225 3.2 Wish list ...

Posted Clickfinity on 03 November 2010 - 06:50 AM

I appreciate Matt and the team have their own plans and are probably well on their way with 3.2, but here's what I'd like to see for CycleChat:

  • View new content - Show what is actually new (unread) content; show topics only (as opposed to multiple posts from the same topic).
  • Hover preview (really liking the new version) - To work on forum view, all search results, and personal conversations - with ACP options for trigger time, and post-hover fade time.
  • Thread marking - to mark up to where I have actually read in a thread, rather than marking the whole thing as read. (Matt has said this is on the list - yippee! )
  • Lighter CSS - There's tons of the stuff ... can it be made lighter by making more "global" style attributes (with the option of adding custom code if needed)?
  • Better editor - I've lost count of the number of "issues" people have had with the post editor. Hopefully some improvements for 3.2? Emoticons as a pop-up perhaps?
  • Simple alerts, likes, and trophies - Not strictly an "everyman" feature set, but after playing with xF this is something I think would greatly improve member-engagement at my site.
  • Simple out-of-the-box Article system - IP.Content is great, but confuses the hell out of me. I just want a simple, categorised, article system where I select from a pre-built template, apply my site "style" as a wrapper, and then start adding articles.
  • Expiring notifications - Once I've read a message, remove the notification about it.
I'm sure I can think of others, but that's not a bad start for now.

Cheers,
Shaun :D

#2035788 Requesting Google Sitemap

Posted Dan on 31 October 2010 - 06:32 AM

The next release of Sitemap Generator is coming, and will be released with Invision Power Services as the author. There is, admittedly, a lot of work to be done on it before it could be a "core" feature of IP.Board or included by default, but it's as official as you're going to get at the moment.

Some things I'll be changing in upcoming releases though:

  • Blog, Gallery, Nexus and Downloads will be supported when their next versions are released.
  • I'll be adding support for generating multiple sitemaps. Each app will be able to generate as many as they need to. This will mean we can support more like 50,000 topics rather than the current 25,000 limit.
  • Basic support for priorities and change frequencies. Followed later by more in-depth support.

Feel free to leave feedback about it either here or in the topic, and I'll try to include any requests that are feasible. Ideas on how you'd like to see priorities generated would be great.
