#2102239 Feature Suggestion: A simple invitation system

Posted Ankit Aggarwal on 14 April 2011 - 08:55 PM

It is such a common thing these days that communities starting out as closed community to preserve quality of discussions inside. Quora and Forrst are two such examples. But in that case, only way to spread the word is through invitations so that people with similar interest can joun in.

I am not in favor of importing gmail or facebook contacts in bulk, but there should be a feature that a person can enter 2-3 emails manually to invite their friends. The no. of invitations per person can either be fixed/month or can be based on amount of contribution.

Can we expect something like this in future?

How would they handle multi-page threads?

#2180464 Email integration ?

Posted omarf on 10 October 2011 - 01:11 AM

Is this feature still under consideration by IPS?

It exists for phpBB2, and it's been in (stalled) development for phpBB3 under the name mail2forum. It also exists for vBulletin 3.x as a supported extension called Email Integration.

One of my forums makes extensive use of mail2forum, and it adds significant value to the members because it allows those who prefer email communication to be active, while those who prefer an online interface can avoid emails if they wish. Best of both worlds!

Mail2Forum handles attachments, too. The way it works is fairly simple: Each forum is assigned an email address and registered users can send an email to that address thereby starting a new topic. Users "subscribe" to individual forums and each time a post is made, all subscribed users get the post (and attachments) by email. They can reply to the email message, and their reply is threaded in the forum thread. It's a very neat idea, unfortunately the development stalled for phpBB3, so we're stuck having to use phpBB2 which is getting old and doesn't support much of what modern forums offer.

I would love to buy the IPS community suite if it included the email integration feature!

So, what do you say, IPS? Can you do it?

Cheers!

#2168841 Post Edit History - REALLY NEED THIS

The database space issue isn't as big a deal as you might think - it will only be edited posts that will require the extra info storing, and that's only going to be a small percentage.

Just look at how many posts you've made here, then think about how many you've edited. It will only be a small portion of the total.
If IPS didn't put a 5 minute limit on editing then I'd edit posts all the time.

My opinion is that it sounds like a nice feature, but could cause large databases to grow in size greatly.   This (database size) can be a real problem for very large boards.

#2169643 Calendar needs List View

Posted m3rk0rd on 12 September 2011 - 10:49 PM

I would like to suggest the Calendar application have a List View (like the Agenda View in Google Calendar), in addition to the current options of Month View, Week View, and Day View.

My board typically has dozens of calendar events spread out over the next several years.  Its just not practical for visitors to skim through many months to find out about new events.

A simple List View would solve this, in which the list of upcoming events would be displayed with the dates and titles, and perhaps an option to show part of the description as well.

People shouldn't have to have a "strong argument" to suggest a feature. We all pay for Invision products, so we're all entitled to our own opinions. If you don't think that a navigation system needs to be added—great. Obviously, a lot of others (myself included) do, so there's no reason you should discredit them for that opinion.

I think that a navigation management system is crucial, for all of the reasons pointed out above. I've spent hours trying to add links and have them display as active on the pages they are active on. It's not simple. Though YOU may not use a nav management system, I certainly will, and I'm sure others will also.

This thread truly shows ungratefulness at its finest. If you don't want to spend money and you don't want do it yourself don't expect anything to get done. In the time that you sat here complaining on the forums you could have coded it yourself. Not everything is going to be spoon fed to you. Welcome to the real world.

This post shows selfishness at its finest. It works for you so other's suggestions obviously have no merit. Duh.

TBH I expect more helpful responses from community moderators.

#2120437 So frustrated and upset with ip.Board

Posted Digitalis on 09 June 2011 - 07:39 PM

honestly i think it pretty widely agreed that IP.Content is for more advanced users. I'm not an advanced user, but pushed through it :) just keep sending in tickets, i mean you are paying for a service  but let me give you a few tips, pages are made in a language like html etc, blocks go on pages to show information, you';; need to learn css divs etc to place everything where you want to

Ouch! How did I get my IP.Suite? Did I pay for it or did I steal it? (Although I'm currently no active customer this was a rhetoric question, I bought my package about a year ago)

Now we are not allowed to suggest features? We suggested this a while back, we have had many discussions on why some of us don't want to pay for 3rd party hooks and modifications.

Now I tell you what it is with me.
I'm not a good programmer already, not half as good as many mod-authors here. I can make small modifications, have even made a very tiny CMS myself, but generally I simply don't have the time to keep up with security-updates... that's why I don't want to add too much functionality on my own. I'm not a web-programmer after all. The reason why I don't want to use 3rd party-modifications is not the price, it's the consequences that suddenly arise if the author stops development.

This has happened way too often in past. (And it's not about the money)

Once bitten, twice shy.

I'm requesting this, and other features, so IP.Products get better for everyone that uses them. But okay, we can have everything in mods. Why does a forum need facebook? -> Mod, Why does a forum need a memberlist? Bloat -> mod! Why do we need a calendar? Bloat! -> Mod...

This reply truly shows how naive some of the members here are. I assume you're one of those people who think it's either black or white, never gray in between? I'm not taking any sides here but if this feature is so easy to code yourself then why can't IPS include it when several FREE solutions already include it? Not everything is just "code it yourself". Also, in the time you wrote your answer you could've actually read his replies and seen that he already have coded this for his community. Welcome to thinking-before-replying.

I (and others) have suggested this several times, but I still don't understand why IPB doesn't allow one to easily add custom navigation tabs/buttons (like the forums, members, etc buttons at the top).  I am aware that you can edit the skin to do this, but this should be easily done through the ACP.  This would be especially useful for those with IP.content integrated into their IPB installation.

Were you not going to explain in this thread when (link from another thread) what X,Y,X option was taken out and why? Still waiting on that. ^_^
