#2226542 Hats off again to the entire IPB Staff and Support

Posted R1-Limited on 30 January 2012 - 08:40 PM

I may not be the brightest star in the cosmos, but one of the best things I ever did was move from VB to IPB

7 plus cases in support all closed in the past 24 hours and all of these issues was either caused by being brain dead or well being dumb and not paying attention.

Bar Non, IPB stands on its own simply form the outstanding support the team has.  Let alone the software which I have seen grow termendously BECAUSE THEY LISTEN TO THE COMPLAINTS.  I started on 3.1.2 and now am Beta testing as I was invited to do so.  I thnk it is they know I can really screw things up so I am a great beta tester

Anyway, Thaks you Jason, Andrew, Ryan and if I missed any one, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

It all started when I had an idea for a new site.  Instead of just using IPB, I setup Joomla with Community Builder thinking I could make a go out of it.  The competing site uses almost the same software although we established the site differently, it soon became appeartn, many were not gogin to join simply because of the Joomla software an the bad experiance on the site.

So I opted to move to IPB, Painfully I made mistakes, suffered loss time and i know a dozen or more postential members during the past week.

IPB Dug me out of the hole in great time and i am happy to say http://www.flattrackers.com is online and ready to show its stuff.

What we are? We are an inspired site dedicated to the art of Flat Track Racing and its History. From the early board track racing years to present we will be covering it all. The History, the stories, the champions it is all part of this great yet sadly diminishing sport.

Our goal? To be the face book of Flat Tracking to bring a new vibrancy and audience to share and remissness of the golden years. About the men who battled the dirt ovals on Indians, Harleys, BSA, Triumphs and anything that would resemble a motorcycle. There is a rich, vast history to this sport, with each AMA District boasting its own National Champions Like Gentlemen Joe Leonard the very first GNC champion out of Dist36 and the world famous King Kenny Roberts also of Dist36 heritage. We invite all who have enjoyed the sport, made it what it is, former champs and upcoming champs, fans and racers this site is for you, let get it going.

Join us and contribute to our forums, help us chronicle and share the great history of Flat Tracking. The families, the life long buddies those epic battles all have a need to be shared.

THANK YOU IPB

#1928406 One of the worst things about support here

Posted A Walk in Faith on 18 March 2010 - 09:20 PM

The problem with that is then the warez kiddies can find information too.

P2P forums that are under lock and key is a good thing in my opinion... now, if they could figure out how to get their search to work like Google, then they would be on to something.. (w00t)

I do understand where you're coming from because like yourself I like searching and finding things rather than bother people with something that has been asked over and over again....

#1921177 Allow tech support to input ideas from tickets

Posted Morrigan on 04 March 2010 - 09:56 PM

Don't quote me, since I'm not staff at IPS, but I think part of the reason they require you to post here is to see it's popularity as well as arguments for and against it. While I can see a point to your suggestion, you must also must see it from the other side of the spectrum. They aren't a huge business and so getting suggestions, products improvements and the like in so many different places and ways could just be too spread out for them. Having all feedback here and all bugs in the tracker is simple and consolidated. It's also easier for a customer to find and support a suggestion that has already been posted.

:D Hope that's not too big an inconvenience for you.

PS. About the lazy thing? If a person is too lazy to suggest or look for something then they obviously don't want it bad enough. ;)

#1853347 Print functionality for Blogs?

Posted liquidfractal on 06 September 2009 - 04:10 PM

I was hoping that the promised-at-some-point re-implementation of the printable-view function for blog postings would have been included by now.

In the old 2.x version (before the generational upgrade), there was a GREAT (even if incomplete) print function that allowed for a professionally-formatted print format for blog entries.  This is important for those of you who, like me, intend to use the blogs for quasi-professional purposes and would like to be able to print out entries in a half-decent format for use.

For some reason, that functionality has gone from the new blogs - and unfortunately, browser print options are simply unacceptable (try it - you'll see what I mean, especially if you use emoticons at all!

So I insisting - in the nicest possible way, mind you - that this functionality be re-implemented! :D  Can I get a "Yay print-function" from other users?

#1849651 [suggestion] Add reputation as criteria for group promotion

^Exactly, similar to the friends things: Just ask friends to register to rep them (but not post). "Easy" promotion.

Yes but again this is an argument against the complete rep system not promotion based on reputation. How many people's friends are going to register to a random board just to get a friend a minor promotion.

The point is, if the reputation system is any use at all, then it should be used for purposes such as this. Otherwise its entire existence is totally pointless. If the reputation system works succesfully, as it does on my board, then we should be able to utilise it fully. And would remove the temptation to reply to every post with inane smilies and comments that add nothing to discussion.

#1849615 [suggestion] Add reputation as criteria for group promotion

Would it be possible to add number of reputation points as a criterion for group promotion? I think this is a better way of determining quality of members than number of posts and days since joining.

#1840175 Suggestion: ACP option to disable IPB's automatic Link wrapping (showing...

Posted OverDriveAdamJ on 07 August 2009 - 04:10 PM

Please see
http://forums.invisi..._1840069__st__0

As the internet slowly moves to longer URLs, with better descriptions of the content, truncating the link's text should be an option in ACP (either enable/disable, or enable and x amount of characters, with your default of ~35 characters). It's easier to see what content your link is going to if it's longer than the truncating number, especially if it's all from a domain with a long name, and multiple links from the same website's directory within the same post.

#1817853 I want to smell IPB

I vote no on this feature.  People requesting new modifications will want their own custom smell integration (smelligration?) settings, group permissions, etc.  More work for the mod authors.

#1808536 View New Content

I really don't think it's the "majority" of users.  Please remember that 5 (or 100 for that matter) users aren't the "majority" with a user-base as large as we have. :)
That old running thread on the Preview forum had quite a few posts in agreement with what I (and others) wrote, and my first post in that thread was quite upvoted.  I would hazard a guess that the majority of people that regularly use the "View New Posts" function on 2.3.6 see the new "View New Content" results as a downgrade.

Nevertheless, we have been listening, and slowly improving the search from it's first incarnation.  AtariAge even mentions this in his post.  We've added back some of the more useful features to the search results.
Some.

@Brandon D - each app can alter the search display, yes, which is why I said it could be skinned.  However, to go back to a IPB 2.3 style display we'd need to make the results tabular (in a table), and each search app can only alter the "row".  Because it's wrapped as a list presently, and not a table, it's a bit more challenging to make it look exactly like it did in 2.3.
Yes, please do make the results tabular.  Overall you guys have done a great job with 3.0, I'm quite confident that you are up to the challenge of properly remedying this issue.  This is really the only major sticking point I have with 3.0 and it's a big one (the other being new topic markers, which is somewhat related).

Quote

Let me ask you this, since I don't have the link to the old thread(s) on this offhand....what data is presently missing in the search results that is truly useful?  Last post, view count and reply count, forum breadcrumb are all there.  What is it that is missing exactly?  I mean, is it really necessary to show every single bit of data that may have previously been in search results (I personally found the old 2.3 style search results a bit more confusing to sift through than the newer ui myself, but that's just an opinion) for the sake of saying it's there?  Or is there something truly useful that isn't there now that would suddenly "fix" view new content?
It wasn't broken to begin with and did not need fixing at all.

1) Bring back the columnar format.  It's easy to parse, and your eyes know right where to go for each bit of information once you're familiar with the format.  The new format uses two "rows" of information for each "new" result and there is plenty of wasted white space.  In this particular instance, adding white space for the sake of making the results appear "cleaner" simply doesn't work in my opinion.  This goes against the grain "form follows function".

2) The topic title links to the first new post in the thread.  Previously, the topic title linked to the first post in the thread and you used the "New Post" icon to go to the first new post. Now there is no way to go to the first post, which is useful if you want to catch up on a thread you haven't viewed in a while (among other reasons).  This is completely inconsistent with how the title link works when viewing the topic list in a forum (which itself isn't consistent when viewing the forum index!!)

3) Number of "Views" was removed.  Useful to see threads that are particularly active.

4) "Topic Starter" was removed.  This is nice information to have, as you may be more interested in threads started by particular users than others.  As a forum admin, this is also useful when you want to keep an eye on threads started by particular users (for instance, someone who may be a trouble starter).

5) You can no longer click on the number of "Replies" to get a popup showing the replies in a thread.

6) No attachments icon so you can see threads with attachments in them.  This also includes the accompanying link that would give you a popup showing all the attachments (which I have used many times).

7) No means to get to the "Last Post".  Currently in 2.3.6, the "Last post by" text links to the last post in the thread.  Useful if you want to jump right to the end of a thread.

8) Page links were removed for threads spanning multiple pages.  This includes the "Jump to page" link shown before the page links.

9) The "Get active topics for:" dropdown at the bottom of the "View New Post" results is gone.  Functionality removed.

As you can see, even with the improvements you've made, there's still quite a bit missing from the original "View New Posts" results.   Much of this functionality exists when viewing the topics in a forum.  Link to first post in thread, topic starter, attachment link, replies link, link to last post, and number of views are all present, in a nice, columnar format.  But the "View New Posts" results as it exists in 2.3, which is nearly identical in appearance, contains too much information?  What?

Please bring back the functionality and appearance of the 2.3.6 "View New Posts" results.
