What you consider a basic feature, others may consider bloated/useless functionality. There is only so much IPB can include by default but there are alternatives.
Search the IPS Marketplace for mods/hooks that do what you want. If you can't find a mod, request it in the modification request forum so modders/contributors know about your idea. In some cases a hook may not be able to do what you want but you can add customizations with file/template edits as well.

As a Perpetual license holder, I do somewhat understand where you are coming from in regards to legacy customers but wouldn't say it's a sinister plot to get more money/profit from me. I do think IPS are being gracious here by offering a conversion to the new license structure with additional services that does cost them more to deliver. To be fair, this particular discussion has been had many times with IPS already stating a position and plenty of opportunity for those who disagree to give feedback. The topic you link to went for 2 pages, so that's hardly squashing criticism.

I use View New Content quite a bit and this would be my only problem with 3.2. It's not the biggest deal, only adds a scroll down to the bottom and a few clicks but as I view VNC several times an hour, I'm starting to notice it. Couple of suggestions I've been thinking of:
1. Change "Mark Community Read" to a delayed hover link, so you can mark the whole community read with one click but if you need to mark a specific application read, just wait for the hover to launch.

2. On the VNC page, add an option to "Mark (app_name) Read". So if you browsing the Forums, you would have an option to mark forums read. Example.

I think Michael John will upgrade his plugin for 3.2
Yes I plan on upgrading all of my mods unless IPB makes any of them fully redundant.

Any chance that this can be added in the next version? This would make my Auto Welcome Members mod edit free and I'm sure could be useful to other modders.

Now that onGroupChange provides the old group id, I'm hoping to make one of my mods edit free (Auto Welcome Members). But there is no memberSync onGroupChange call for the members auto validation function. Just wanted to check is it possible that this can be added in v3.1.0 final?

I was looking for the 'Custom Services' area to refer someone their who needed custom work but couldn't find the link without a Google search. A link somewhere in the resources area might help new members find it better.

For serious issues like this, it's probably best to open a support ticket, you should see a checkbox when opening your ticket for critical issues. While you wait for an IPS response, you could also post your ips driver error that other customers might be able to help with in the peer to peer support forums . You can get the exact IPS driver error in the forums/cache/ folder and find a file like this sql_error_log_##_##_##.cgi (replacing ##_##_## for month_day_year).
