#1914254 What exactly are databases in IP Content?

Posted Bobbins on 16 February 2010 - 02:36 PM

Database are amazing is what they are. If you want to create an articles section, databases make it easy, if you want to create a section for users to submit recipes, databases make it easy.

Lets say you want a section for articles on your site, you set up the fields, i.e "Article title", "Article Desciption", "Article Author", "Article Content", and then use the default template, or create your own (templates are used to define how the article is displayed etc). Users or yourself (depending on permissions) can then simply use the article creation page to add a new article by filling in all the fields.

#1902528 IP.Board 2.3.6 and Related Applications: end of life announcement

Posted IPS News on 22 January 2010 - 10:02 AM

IP.Board 3 was released on June 25, 2009 and through the various update cycles is now a stable, mature product with a version 3.1 release forthcoming.

So that we can focus all of our development, support, and service efforts on our new version 3 platform, we are announcing the end of support (sometimes called end of life or EOL) for the following IPS software versions (and earlier versions than those listed):

  • IP.Board 2.3.6
  • IP.Blog 1.4.2
  • IP.Gallery 2.2.4
  • IP.Downloads 1.2.2

Technical support, installations, and related services will end for these products on July 1, 2010. On that date all technical or service requests will be advised to simply upgrade to the most recent versions of the products. We will not force upgrades but will also not be able to diagnose issues or answer questions relating to the older software. Also, on that date, IPS will no longer address any new issues or bugs reported in the older software versions.

Security Updates

In the event an issue is discovered impacting the security of these older versions of the software, IPS will provide a patch posted in our announcements forum. We will continue to provide security updates until January 1, 2011.

#1890305 IP.Metrics

Posted Garthilk on 20 December 2009 - 11:24 AM

In addition to tracking visitors, pageviews, signups, etc., IP.Metrics would show you how many threads and posts are being created over time. It also shows which threads are the most active, most viewed, etc on a daily, or variable basis. How many PM's were sent in a given period, who are the most communicative members. Give the most status updates, etc. What are popular topics, etc. I'd love to see topic trending, hot topics, topic metrics. Who are the power users, spending most time on the site, conversion rates for new users to post, new users time on site, etc.

Now, no one should disagree: message boards are hard to monetize conversations trapped inside them. If one could solve this quandary, they could somehow make money. I think good analytics is going to be key. If IP customers can make money easier, then IP in turn should make more money.

#1889420 Invision Power Services Are Rip Offs & Thefs

Posted WWN_merged on 17 December 2009 - 01:08 PM

back in 2004 & 2005 I bought a Invision Power Board (IPB) lifetime license from Invision Power Services.

I then shut down my IPB site for a few years because I didn't have the funding to keep it up

It's now 2009 and I found the funding to put my site back online so I went into my Invision Power Services client account to get IPB 3.0.5 and my Invision Power Board (IPB) lifetime is misisng form my account. I sent a ticket to the Invision Power Services staff about this and all they say is they found where i bought the 2 Invision Power Board (IPB) lifetime licenses from them but both Invision Power Board (IPB) lifetime licenses were sold & I know this is not true I rember I sold the one that was bought in 2005 a few mounths ago but I didn't sellt he one that was bought in 2004 so I sould still have a Invision Power Board (IPB) lifetime license in my account but they are saying I don't.

So anyone who is looking to buy IPB do your self a big favor and don't because if this happened ot me then who knows how many other clients they have done this to.

Hello,

It's difficult to address these matters in public. We keep logs, e-mails and all electronic communication -- I found yours from 2007 in which the transaction receipt was provided indicating the new owner paid you for the licenses and you authorizing the transfer (you specified "2 licenses.") This also had verification of your client area password, establishing that you were actually making the request. We do not allow a single license transfer - you may only sell the account, which is what you did.

This is exactly why we discourage license transfers to be honest. Many times, someone will sell a license, decide they wish they hadn't and then return, often years later, to reclaim it. We then dedicate hours of research time to determine who the rightful owner of the license is -- and 99% of the time, the current license holder is the rightful license holder.

I'm sorry you did not like the outcome of our investigation. You're free to contact me with any questions or concerns, however, this is not the appropriate place for further discussion.

Thank you.

#1889111 only 5 users in the free version?

Posted bfarber on 16 December 2009 - 02:33 PM

Hmm, perhaps you misunderstood my last reply. I was certainly not trying to be rude...

I was simply asking if you missed the post that explained how to correct the SQL error. Your original post did not indicate if you missed that post or not, so I had no way of knowing (hence why I asked, and also provided a link). Apologies for any misunderstanding.

There was an additional post to the announcement that explained exactly how to stop the database errors when uninstalling Chat....did you miss that post perhaps?

It is sad when staff resort to rudeness.

I have this several times within my control panel

Should I read every post on the forums?

#1888911 only 5 users in the free version?

Posted Trevor Brandt on 16 December 2009 - 06:49 AM

I agree. I was thinking more along the lines of ten, but five seems way too low.

Maybe IPS just can't handle that many people chatting for free though? I mean, it is using their servers. Hopefully the other pricing packages aren't too expensive.

#1888908 only 5 users in the free version?

Posted .Ian on 16 December 2009 - 06:28 AM

Seems a rather low figure, and one that most sites would go over.

Was hoping it would be say 20 rather than 5, which is a reasonable number for a small community.

One would have to question whether it would be worth installing at all if a site was limited to 5 - would be better sticking with the shoutbox.

#1872007 An admin's guide to skinning IPB

#1871673 An admin's guide to skinning IPB

Posted bfarber on 26 October 2009 - 10:29 AM

Many users interested in converting to IP.Board ask what is involved in converting a skin from another forum software to IPB, or how skins are created in IPB.

A helpful member of the community has put together a rather exhaustive guide to skinning IPB that we felt might be useful for some prospective customers interested in learning how IPB can be skinned.

The guide can be found here: http://www.smartestc...showtopic=37422

Thanks to broni for posting this guide. :)

#1879710 Dissapointed in the lack of refund policy

Posted wgl on 16 November 2009 - 10:44 AM

After looking at the demo, we bit on purchasing IPB two weeks ago. Our staff installed the application on a sandbox and within a week's time had determined that while IPB is a solid product, the core files do not suit our project. We inquired about a refund policy and were informed that there was none. We are now the proud owner of a $150 forum application that will likely never be used.

Double check, triple check and quadruple check everything before you purchase. There's no turning back.

#1875137 A few questions

Posted ΑndyF on 03 November 2009 - 03:04 PM

Yes, you can upgrade your hosting package by simply submitting a ticket and requesting it. I'd expect it is a very simple matter (possible exception being moved from a shared server to a dedicated one) for a hosting technician to change your hosting package. :)

No, there's nothing tricky. You can always submit a ticket if you have any specific queries or post in the Peer to Peer forums if you prefer, although if you could expand on any specific area(s) you are concerned about we can probably answer your question in more detail.

There is also a large amount of both official and customer submitted documentation available too.
