#2120212 Reputation TAB needed in profile view

VB has it since ages. IPb wants to stay in  1980 age.
Just because another software has a feature does not mean IP.Board needs to add it, nor does it mean IP.Board "wants to stay in 1980 age.".  You're not a fan, we get it, you don't need to take every opportunity to bash IP.Board just because it's not the forum software you prefer.

I don't feel this is something that needs added to the core software.  Reputation is something that can lead to bad things, like people trying to game the system, or competing just to get a higher rep score rather than being actually good contributing members of the forum.  It should be left as a third party addon you can install if you want.  If the ones out there for this presently don't meet your needs, have you tried discussing changes with the developer?

One thing that has been added in IP.Board is that you can get notified about posts you have made getting liked.  I didn't think I'd like that when it was discussed a while back, but I've turned it on here since this site has gone to 3.2 and I think it's a pretty nice addition.

#2116545 3.2 Skin Improvement Suggestion

Great ideas for your own custom skins.....
You act as if we're not allowed to offer commentary on the skin, which is unfinished, as far as I'm concerned, until 3.2 is officially released.

#2065484 Linear + in 3.2

Posted 3DKiwi on 09 January 2011 - 04:42 PM

I vote to get rid of it. I doubt many people still use it. One of the main problems with IPB is it's getting cluttered. Removing things that hardly anyone uses any more makes sense to me. That's why so many people are raving about Xenforo because it's fairly clean looking and easier for people to figure out how to use.

It's funny how you see the social groups in vB as the "general" way of doing social groups.
Just because vB had a bad implementation of this feature doesn't mean that it's a bad feature. Think of groups in Facebook, it is widely used and often very interesting. I can definitely see this feature as a very good one, IPS just needs to think it through to get the maximal implementation.

#2029592 Forum icons - are they really necessary?

Posted Matt on 14 October 2010 - 01:52 PM

This is one of those situations where it's irrelevant what I think. We have to go with the masses.

I do tend to agree that the forum icons only duplicate information shown elsewhere and I certainly don't look at them anymore. I'd rather have the person's "face" rather than a repeated icon. It makes it more personal.

If we were to do this then I think we should just do it. No options, no hooks, etc. Too many options makes for poor software.

I would have to disagree....I really like the forum icons. I feel the forum would be rather bland and boring without them!

Sorry Olivier, just my opinion. :)
But..but....but it's always the same thing. Same icons over and over again. I think that is boring.

I am talking about the icons next to the topic titles in the forum view. Are they really necessary? I think it becomes obsolete and repetitive. I think that we should replace them with the topic starter's avatar and just bold the titles if there are new answers (like it is now). I also think we should just put a tiny icon next to the topic title so we know if we have replied to that topic.

#2023366 Tags again

Posted Ditchmonkey on 27 September 2010 - 03:45 PM

We are getting all these announcements about product "improvements" and still no mention of a tags system. Tags have been asked for numerous times by many members and really should be a standard feature in a modern piece of software like this.

Are we going to get tags in the next 6 months?

#1998958 Close to Moving Back to Vbulletin

Posted RonR on 02 August 2010 - 01:05 PM

On my forum, which is a football fans forum, we have an exceedingly high number of warnings that need to meted out to the more "robust" members.

The admins and moderators are increasingly finding that the current Warning system in IPB is just not robust enough to be able to deal with multiple warnings, and/or warnings handed out to the same member (for instance).

In vbulletin - there was the ability to have set "infraction" levels which were user set to expire after a set period of time, and could have varying levels of severity - from an increase to the naughtiness level, to a complete ban.

IPB valiantly try to mimic this, but it falls way short of what is actually useable by a busy site, and indeed, by one who's mods and admins NEED to warn so frequently.  We installed the auto decrease mod - but to be honest, it just makes things harder to track...warn logs as well, help, but are not overly helpful to the mods.

The issue of tracking warns etc is taking up too much of my moderators time, and whilst they are trying to wade through previous infractions, more and more are building up, and some of the more serious issues are being neglected.

My question is, and it's one that's been asked before - Do Invision plan on making a more robust system ?  I can't (unfortunately) see us staying with ipb if there are no definite or concrete plans to introduce a system that can be easily understood, or, more applicable to a busy, robust, site.

Apologies for the rant, but it's a lot "tamer" than that which I am getting from my mods !

Thanks !

#2016531 IP.Board 3.1.x Security Patch Released

Posted IPS News on 07 September 2010 - 09:42 AM

A security issue has been discovered in IP.Board 3.1.x that could potentially allow a malicious user to insert JavaScript or other code into your community.

The damage this sort of attack can do is drastically mitigated by IP.Board's use of HTTP-only cookies and other security measures.

As part of our continued dedication to security enhancement, we are releasing a simple patch for IP.Board 3.1.2 to address this issue. If you are running IP.Board versions less than 3.1.2 simply upgrade your software version.

Download Patch

Simply upload the attached file to: admin/sources/classes/bbcode/custom/defaults.php

Attached File  312_sept_patch.zip   11.15K   3017 downloads

#2015177 Suggestion: Reports posted to nominated forum (rather than report centre)

Posted Matt on 03 September 2010 - 03:33 PM

I can (re)assure that there is much internal discussion about moderator tools for near future releases.

BTW - most of this discussion has been about warnings, not reports.  Would it really be useful to see recent warnings in view new content?  I can understand reports, but not sure about warnings?
Yes, and ideally I'd have that as a forum topic too. If I'm issuing a warning there's a good chance I'm going to want to also discuss it with moderators (even if it's just to say 'This %$£%$ again . . . '

True, but that's no reason for the warning process not to be improved.

#2013290 Close to Moving Back to Vbulletin

Posted Jυra on 30 August 2010 - 10:53 AM

My problems with the warning system are bellow...

They don't expire, give an option to the moderator if they want to PM the member, shows in topic view, or give much notice to other staff about the new warnings. If I was given a warning, I'd just get back to posting without that big oppressive warning bar on every one of my posts. If there's ever an option for warnings to expire, it would be nice to have an option for keeping the warning notes or having them disappear completely.

Then you have bans, yet no way to leave notes to why a person is banned or a ban message. A suspension can come from warnings, but at least the member had warnings that tell them what lead to their suspension.

#2012329 Suggestion: Reports posted to nominated forum (rather than report centre)

Posted Clickfinity on 27 August 2010 - 08:01 PM

Can I suggest a modification to the report centre - can we have an option to post reports into a forum instead of the report centre (or as well as).

I imagine an ACP dropdown of all the forums you have, with nothing selected initially - and by specifying a forum all future reports are posted (or copied) there.

My moderators are really struggling with the report centre and having the reports in a forum would keep the "active / current" ones we are discussing at the top, allow us to edit our posts (you can't edit report comments!!), and will more searchable too.

I'm currently considering copying all the reports into our moderators forum so I can get my moderators involved again.

Cheers,
Shaun :D
