#2077826 IP.Board 3.0.x / 3.1.x Security Update and Mobile API Update

Posted IPS News on 08 February 2011 - 04:39 AM

A minor security issue has been discovered within the forum password system that could allow exposure of topic titles in password-protected forums. This issue does not allow the topics to be viewed and only affects forums that are password protected.

We have released a simple patch for this issue. To apply, simply download the correct zip file and upload the file(s) over the ones on your server. There is no need to rebuild or reset any templates or language packs. Customers with active support are welcome to ask technical support for assistance if required.

IP.Board 3.0.x
Attached File  patch-feb-3.0.zip   10.87K   537 downloads

IP.Board 3.1.4
Attached File  patch-feb-3.1.zip   17.9K   1404 downloads

In addition to the security patch described above, the IP.Board 3.1.4 patch also includes an update to our mobile API designed to resolve some issues, provide better integration for our iPhone application and to provide IP.Gallery 4.0 support alongside IP.Gallery 3.2.x.

The main download zips have been updated at the time of this post so if you have downloaded after the date of this message you do not need to apply this patch.

#2054384 My 3 wishes for IPB 3.2

Posted Enkidu on 10 December 2010 - 06:51 PM

Hello

I thought of sharing with you guys my personal 3 wishes for IPB 3.2 and I hope that IPS would become my gennie of the lamp

1- Notification Systems
IPS introduced their inline notification system in IPB 3.1 which is a cool idea. Many of my members are using it to get notifications about who have quoted their posts or who posted to their topics. But the the problem is: IPS presented this cool feature in the form of a nagging popup window. There is a reason why, for example, Microsoft doesn't use a popup message box any more because it's really annoying to the user. Popup messages appear from no where and in times that you might be posting a reply and they just block you from easily browsing the board. We now see that Windows notifications have been moved to the toolbar tray area and now they display as a cool balloon.

How come IPB doesn't have a bottom toolbar with integrated notification system? I'm talking about something similar to this. Surely, you can stop IPB from displaying popup windows but then the only way for you to access your notifications is through the notification drop down menu... so ninety in my opinion...who uses drop down windows like this nowadays? Can we get something more animated like drop down on hovering with some cool effects?

2- Caring about new members
For guests, registering in a website is just the start of a long journey to understand the culture and the technical details of a board. A new member needs to know how to post, what is the difference between qoute and multiqiute, where is this and that, and so on and so forth.

Some of my members keep ask me the same question over and over again, like how do I change my display name? yes I know that there is a help system available to them but they even don't know about that!

What I propose is a form of a walkthrough for new members. Something like we see in games. Imagine that when you sign in for the first time, you get a notification from your toolbar welcoming you and offering more help about basic account setup and posting ... etc, and when you click on a setting you'll get more info about that setting. When you post, you get a more info about posting such as BBcodes and how to use them or how to enable the rte editor. Basically a tutorial mode such as your first mission in a computer game!

3- Board index
why does the board index has to be the way it is right now? I mean everything in internet forum software has changed so why we still keeping this logical presentation of having forums wrapped inside categories? Especially when only few use them. You don't normally go through a forum topics to get what's new, but you rather click on VNC. This is the first thing I do here and at my board. So why do we present the board this way? why not use a frontpage that is more focused on what's new such as personal feeds that I'm starting to see more and more people using them.

Now I can think of another wish but hey! let's not be greedy

thank you

I think that's a rather good point right there.  You yourself said that you know they are not native to RTL, so they obviously rely on those who are to report the issues so that they can figure out a solution to the problem.  There are even problems with LTR so it's not like it's anything biased against RTL layouts in any way.  It could be worse though, there could be issues where it's TTB vs BBT (Top to Bottom/Bottom to Top), with LTR/RTL variances of each.  THAT would be a nightmare. :)

Seriously? You think vBulletin's RTL support is good? Have a read of this: http://www.vbulletin...me-and-my-staff

(For those who can't read that, it's a 12 page topic in the vBulletin customer forums complaining about RTL support)

so what exactly is your point here? You didn't think I'm advertising vB here, did you? I LOVE IPS. I really do. Otherwise, you wouldn't find me here. but the thing is: this is the IP.Board feedback forum. So, you tell me, does it have to be always positive feedback in the sort of: cheers you're the best...thank you guys...blah blah blah?

As for HOW we attend to RTL, having a CSS file that overrides the primarily styles is EXACTLY the right way to handle it if you ask me.  We can tailor the display to the RTL language, without having to maintain an entirely duplicated and secondary skin.

not sure what you mean by "having a CSS file that overrides the primarily styles is EXACTLY the right way to handle it" because I don't think so.

sometimes you have a div (or whatever) with:

left: 10px; in ipb_styles
and then you have for the same div
right: 10px; in ibp_rtl

and you see IE7&6 smearing the div from right to left.

Oh, how I wish the internet had a "Use RTL K THX" button. It doesn't, sadly so we have to rely on these CSS and JS tweaks.

I know but let me put it this way*. vBulletin has a nice right to left test feature. I just checked it under Chrome, FireFox, IE7, and IE8. and you know what? the layout was the same. It's not magic of course but, let's say, better support.

the same thing goes for phpBB.

* yeah it's the vbulletin card  >_<

OK, I know you guys are not RTL native speakers but is RTL that mysterious that you can't tell if a search box is rendered on top of the forum's tabs under IE7? of course, I can report any issues I have to the tracker including those which if you fix for this browser, you gonna end up messing it all up in that browser. I think it's just about time to come up with a more efficient solution. because:

1- You can't just rely on the browser to overwrite properties from, say, ipb_styles with ipb_rtl. It won't always work under IE7

2- It's simply inefficient. Because your including entries that will never be used. But rather got thrown away by the user's browser in favor of those in ipb_rtl.

3- ipb_rtl is sandwiched between to JS includes which would increase loading time and causes the user drop down menu to stay open until the page finish loading.

we need more efficient ways for  handling RTL and to be honest with you no one of us has a real bilingual forum in order to care about how an RTL website would look when switched back to LTR.

thank you
