#2032782 Search is terrible

Posted Cheyne on 23 October 2010 - 01:13 AM

Im in the process of trying to build a my IP Content driven site,  and im hitting many snags around programming,  using my own code and various other adjustments,    I have to keep trying to find information on the Invision forums although im finding it incredibly difficult.

8 times out of 10 my search is rejected due to lack of character length or some other reason.

I wanted to read more on using custom PHP in my blocks,  I search for  "using PHP in blocks" .. i get

Quote

One or all of your search keywords were below 3 characters or you searched for words which are not allowed, such as 'html', 'img', etc, please increase the length of these search keywords or choose different keywords.

So i try "code in blocks" I get the same PLUS another error saying the word "code" is not allowed..  Seriously why ?   You offer products that require people to write code, but searching for the term "code" is not allowed ?

Im sure there is some intelligent and security conscious reason for this,  but from a user experience point of view its horrible .. I have to revise my search queries 3 or 4 times before its actually accepted.

I wanted to know what IP Tracker was , as I didnt know but the name sounded good .. I search for "IP Tracker",  the name of one of your products and get the same error, seriously.

Infact iv been trying to search for things all day and getting no where,  im actually using  google.com and passing     site:invisionpower.com some search  to actually search the forums here because I find it so difficult to use the search function.

I was a long time PHPBB user,  then SMF,  then vBulletin and now IPB , but this is the only time Iv ever struggled to get information so much.   In my opinion search some should fluid,  it should be quick and easy and not require logic or check boxes, forms and multiple selections,  Google has mastered this and thats why they're the kings of search.

Am I the only person who really dislikes the search feature around here?

Hello,

Iam currently a IPB costumer, but not active. I wanna renew  this software. before that I want you to tell me which software (vb or ipb) is the best?

thanks

Hi,

Tell us a bit more about yourself - are you comfortable messing with code / tweaking servers / etc., or are you a techno-newbie?

Do you just want forums? or do you want chat, gallery, downloads, etc.?

Do you have an active site? and if so, how many users / posts?

Have you tried any demo's of the different platforms available?

This exxtra info will help us give you better guidance about what may or may not be more suitable for your needs.

Cheers,
Shaun :D

#2026843 Forum icons - are they really necessary?

Posted Olivier Turbis on 06 October 2010 - 09:17 PM

I am talking about the icons next to the topic titles in the forum view. Are they really necessary? I think it becomes obsolete and repetitive. I think that we should replace them with the topic starter's avatar and just bold the titles if there are new answers (like it is now). I also think we should just put a tiny icon next to the topic title so we know if we have replied to that topic.

#2026856 Any plans to improve the UI ?

How more obvious do you want IPB to make their advanced search? In IPB 3.0 it clearly said "Advanced" and now in 3.1.x it is a COG image. I don't know how much more clearer it can be...

A cog is obvious for us experiences admins but not so obvious for a new member finding their way way around new and unfamilar forum software. If you've looked at XF's search after clicking search it's pretty clear that an advanced search is available. That's my point.

#2025084 Publish date is a complete mess.

Posted Flowsion on 02 October 2010 - 01:18 PM

It's the biggest issue I've been running into on my site, it really does need to get a huge overhaul. When you create an article, it should automatically be set to the 'NOW' date, not a few hours into the future. What's the point of that? Most will want to submit their article right away, not set it to be published in the future.

Second, when you edit an article, it shouldn't push it further into the future. It should keep the date the article was originally edited. Maybe add an 'Edited Date:" or something. It's a huge hassle to have to click 'now' everytime and have the publish date change, when all you want to do is edit an article. It messes up the order to have the date change when all your doing is fixing a typo.

There should be an EASY way to reorganize articles. Drag an article to the top of the list, like you can a forum.

Please, please implement this into the new version, it's an enormous hassle.

#2019344 Pinned articles stay on top in frontpage

Posted na1926 on 15 September 2010 - 06:23 AM

I don't know if it is already been asked, but I ask IPB to change the way Articles are showed in the frontpage...

Pinned articles now are quite useless, they should work like pinned topics and stay up in the frontpage even if new articles are added, just as it happens on the board.

Is it possibile?

Thanks

#2018999 Why I love IP.Content

Posted bfarber on 14 September 2010 - 09:03 AM

I think you guys will be happy with the updates coming in 2.1.

Thank you for all the positive comments, and we are working hard to make IP.Content easier to use, more powerful, and more all-around accessible as we progress.  I think a lot of people forget that IP.Content is only about a year old.  Just think what it will be able to do when it reaches it's second birthday! :D  And just think...you don't have to pay for every individual version release either!

#2016589 Converting from vB 3.8 - Next unread post

Thread marking, while updated in several 3.x releases, will be updated and enhanced (again) in 3.2.  Hopefully these changes resolve any outstanding issues.

Until they fix it and if you use Firefox, try this add-on: https://addons.mozil...fox/addon/8287/
Very handy.

#2012329 Suggestion: Reports posted to nominated forum (rather than report centre)

Posted Clickfinity on 27 August 2010 - 08:01 PM

Can I suggest a modification to the report centre - can we have an option to post reports into a forum instead of the report centre (or as well as).

I imagine an ACP dropdown of all the forums you have, with nothing selected initially - and by specifying a forum all future reports are posted (or copied) there.

My moderators are really struggling with the report centre and having the reports in a forum would keep the "active / current" ones we are discussing at the top, allow us to edit our posts (you can't edit report comments!!), and will more searchable too.

I'm currently considering copying all the reports into our moderators forum so I can get my moderators involved again.

Cheers,
Shaun :D

#1982592 Make IP Address clickable/searchable via Active Users

Under IPB I don't see an easy way of tracking people's ip addresses and I don't see a way at all to have it show guests ip addresses.

ACP -> System Settings -> Security and Privacy. All the way at the bottom. Turn Disable admin groups viewing online users IP address in online user list? off.

#1980204 Invision Customer Support

Posted donrocks on 30 June 2010 - 06:15 PM

A lot of people take the time to complain about things gone wrong, or a job done poorly, but I want to take a moment and publicly thank Invision for over five years of remarkable customer support.  Most recently it was Mark H that delved into a problem my website encountered, but this could easily be about any of several other Invision technicians.  They're ALWAYS responsive and timely.  And on the occasions where it takes multiple iterations to solve a problem (which is simply the nature of the beast), they persevere until it's fixed to my satisfaction.

Really not much to add except Thank You!

#1975959 Hard to say...

Posted Guest on 22 June 2010 - 12:59 AM

For a while now I have been wanting to write up something to say "Hey, Love IPS and the direction it is going in". But, in better words and a deeper description.

Instead, I'd just like to point out how nice it is to roam around the forums and see things like: steady progress, nice useful enhancements, team support & encouragement, member support & encouragement, kindness, etc.

Keep up the good work! Thanks to all...

I see you contacted us three times:

At no point did we ignore your requests and actually each time replied well within our quoted terms as part of our license.

If you do not reply to our messages there is nothing we can do about that :)
