Whenever I think about forum software I always go back to one thing in my mind.

You do not create communities, communities already exist.

The job of good software (and admins) is to help those communities organize themselves. Try not to mold the community with preconceived ideas of what categories and forums may be needed and instead react by organizing the content that is actually created.

I've done tech support for a community like the one that Charles mentioned. You know you've got massive issues with atmosphere on your forum when your tech support folks don't moan about technical issues, but rather speak about having pity for all those innocent bystanders who stumble upon the mess you created.

Grammar - Being professional, using grammar, and punctuation is something that is needed. If you were on a company forum and saw staff writing like "lol, yeah I kno right" that will instantly make me not bother posting on the website or even browse their webste. The members look up to you and then they wish to be a staff member which leads to better members.

Atmosphere - Always try your best to have a great atmosphere. If you have trolling, offensive language or spam going on your boards, it pulls many guests away from your forums.

Appearance - This is another major one for your forums. You want to give your users first impression. Many people will x out of your website if they aren't liking your websites appearance. It's like going to your first interview or going out on a date, they will reject you. You want a skin that is clean, professional, and clear.

#2236582 Teaser Forums: A carrot on a stick to get members to join

Posted Charles on 01 March 2012 - 03:38 PM

Ok I admit I made up the term "teaser forums" just now. There is no such setting in IP.Board but you can create these by creative use of permissions. So let me explain what I mean.

In my very special definition a teaser forum is a forum that a visitor does not actually have access to but it still shows up on the listing. When they click into it rather than getting a not-so-friendly "Permission Denied" message they get a sort of sales pitch. You can have IP.Board display custom text to explain to a member why they should join so they can have access to this special, private area. Another approach may be a paid content area. Let's say you require members pay for access to certain sections of your community. Using the teaser forum approach you can show them what they're missing without actually giving them full access.

Here is a screenshot of settings in Manage Forums from our site:

IP.Board_ > Forums > Forums.jpg

The first setting, Allow members who can see the forum but cannot read topics to see the topic list, is a bit confusing at face value but really all it means is that if a member does not have the "read" permission set for a forum IP.Board will, rather than just showing an error message, show the listing of topics in that forum. However, if a user tries to click into a topic they will then be defined access.

This setting is optional. If you have it enabled it shows a member what topics they could be reading if only they had access. It's a great way to entice people to sign up. If you do not enable this setting then the forum can still show to a user but they will be denied access without seeing the topic listing.

The second setting, Custom 'Permission Denied' Message, is your change to brush up on your sales skills. This is where you can offered the default, generic "permission denied" message and instead present some useful information and encouragement to join. Here on IPS Community we use this feature to explain to members that they have to be an active client to access certain sections.

Sure it's a simple set of features and sure I made up a whole new term today but using these simple settings can really increase your membership by showing people what they are missing.

#2237196 Why Can't You Guys Keep This Simple?

It would make life easier if IPS could publish a list of changed template files with each new release (not including major versions that involve total redesigns, of course). I believe XenForo do this. It means admins can easily use the ACP's template comparison tool to update just the templates that need it, rather than having to check through every single one.

Maybe this is something that is already done and I just haven't noticed it in the past - if that's the case, somebody please tell me where I should be looking.

#2232906 IP.Board Security Update

Posted IPS News on 20 February 2012 - 07:11 AM

It has come to our attention that a XSS (Cross Site Scripting) attack is possible within the Admin CP. The javascript is only executed when viewing the detailed pop-up of a specific failed admin log in.

This issue exists in all IP.Board 3 versions. We recommend that everyone using these versions apply this simple one file patch.

Simply download the zip for your IP.Board version, expand the zip on your computer and upload the file to the relevant folder on your server. The directory structure is maintained in the zip so you will have no issues finding the file.

If you need assistance, please contact technical support.

IP.Board 3.2.x
Attached File  feb_3_2_x.zip   2.72K   4177 downloads

IP.Board 3.1.x
Attached File  feb-3_1_x.zip   2.76K   1068 downloads

IP.Board 3.0.x
Attached File  feb-3_0_x.zip   2.76K   375 downloads

If you are running a version of IP.Board older than those listed we highly recommend you upgrade to the latest, supported version as it will include this and other fixes.

#1905522 Private Chat?

Posted Charles on 28 January 2010 - 11:26 AM

We don't have a time scale as such. We are current designing the back-end requirements for private chats, multiple rooms, etc. which is the hard part. Once that is done we can roll out an upgrade. We can probably post an update on that in the next week or two.

#1904859 Private Chat?

Multiple Rooms and private chatting would be very interesting features!

Maybe only for the paid chat service... :)

#1896184 Admin/Mod Invisibility

Posted Logan on 06 January 2010 - 12:57 PM

It would be great if admins and/or mods could be invisible in the chat room, for silent moderation purposes, and just to check in on things without members' knowledge.

#1907489 Moderated Chat Feedback

Posted karen65 on 01 February 2010 - 08:32 AM

An emergency 'blank screen' system would be useful to completely wipe out the conversation on the screen.  Albeit very rarely, we do occasionally have idiots posting illegal links, and the ability to be able to zap the entire conversation history at a push of a button would be useful.  It would also be useful if somebody has said something that they regretted (yes, I am thinking Friday / Saturday night posting here!)  The only alternative at present is to mass flood the chat until the offending message is cleared.
