#1893420 vBulletin 4 Converter

Posted Mark on 30 December 2009 - 05:49 AM

Several people have been asking about a converter for vBulletin 4 to IP.Board 3.
The converter system on our website at the moment includes a converter for vBulletin 3.8, but not 4.0.

I have been working on a vBulletin 4 converter and it is attached to this post.
It works exactly the same as the converter on our website, and is covered by the conversion service which is available for $60.
For instructions how to use the converter, please see this article: http://community.inv...html?record=175

At the moment, the converter can handle:
  • Importing member data to IP.Board. Including preserving user passwords, custom profile fields, etc.
  • Importing forum data (topics, posts, polls and attachments) to IP.Board.
  • Importing calendars and events to the calendar application which is included with IP.Board.
  • Importing blogs, including comments and attachments to IP.Blog if you have purchased and installed IP.Blog.
  • Importing user's albums, including comments into IP.Gallery if you have purchased and installed IP.Gallery.

It cannot handle:
  • Importing users paid subscriptions.
  • Importing data from vBulletin's CMS feature.
Both of these I will be looking into over the next couple of weeks. If it is critical for you that this data is converted, you should wait until the converter is finished.

If you have any problems with the converter, please submit a support ticket, it will find it's way to me.
If there's any new features in vBulletin 4 which I've missed that you feel could be converted, please let me know :)

#1892474 A potential vB convert

Posted The Geek on 27 December 2009 - 12:16 PM

Hey guys,

Am contemplating a possible switch from vB to IPB and have been looking around quite a bit. I know the grass always seems greener, so I am trying to temper my spontaneity with a dash of cautious optimism.

What I would like to know is:

  • Do you have a showcase of customers where you can really see some unique configurations and customisations (mainly of style)?
  • Do you have any ad integration?
  • Do you plan on being purchased in the near future by IB?
  • Can you sign up to and leave comments for calendar events (or know of a mod to?)
  • Who shot Kennedy?
  • Will IPB convert vB forums, albums and blogs?
  • Do you have social groups?
  • Can you not switch between editors?
  • Can you move content from forums into blogs?
  • Do you have persistent read marking?
  • Can you easily access whats new?
Think thats it for now.

TIA

#1887947 [Suggestion] Permissions for Flagging Spammers

Posted Real Deal on 13 December 2009 - 04:36 AM

Just the other day, my forums had a spammer on, and he posted 50 topics in a matter of 15-20 minutes, spamming for another site.  At the time, no admins or moderators were online.

I would love an option to select who can flag spammers from their profiles, maybe in member group settings.  I have a few dedicated members (who have been with me for five years) who I could trust doing this, and I'd create a new group for them, possibly a secondary group, that had these permissions.

Therefore, the next time this happens, I could have non-staff members flagging spammers (disabling their posting abilities), and it would also be a way to keep them stealth, as they would still be in that default member group.  :)

I suppose it would be the same concept as the Report Post feature, which allows you to select member groups allowed to report...just for the flag spammer feature instead.

Increased forum security is always a good thing.  ;)

#1882269 Mobile skin?

It's likely to be part of 3.1, possibly with a separate beta download before 3.1. It requires some code-level changes to be implemented first.

#1884272 i want to be able to host chat on my servers

We will not be offering a self-hosted option for the first release.

This was mentioned in the original chat testing topic: http://community.inv...ervice-testing/

The online count is cached locally in $this->caches['chatting'] - programmatically you can use this local cache in your IPB install to retrieve the members who are online in chat.

The 'chatting' cache keys are the forum user ids, and the array data holds last update timestamp, chat user id (random id assigned on our side) and the members display name.

#1867725 IP.Chat Service Testing

Posted Charles on 16 October 2009 - 04:31 PM

We are investigating the possibility of offering a chat service for IPB directly from IPS.

This chat service would run inside of your IPB install much like Gallery or Blog however the actual exchange of chat messages would be handled by IPS servers. The high volume of transactions needed for a chat room would probably get you banned from most web hosting providers and, even if you have high-end hosting, it requires a specially tuned server to perform well. You can forget that headache and let us handle the transactions. Chat room statistics and access to log archives will of course be available for owners.

Testing

For the time being, we will only have the chat room open here on our company forums when an IPS staff member opens it. We are looking to test both the interface you use for chatting and the back-end server performance so we need online staff to monitor both sides of the exchange. So keep an eye for the chat link to appear in the top navigation or a "who's chatting" area to show up on the home page under statistics. When you see this then you know the room is available for testing :)

Please post bugs in the bug tracker under the IP.Chat category. You can post feedback here in the feedback forum or just reply to this topic. Please keep in mind this would be a version 1.0.0 so, although we can add all sorts of cool stuff over time, we are focusing on a nice, stable chat room right now. Things like private conversations, multiple rooms, and more are on our list but we must perfect the base chat room before adding on all the extras.

Please note that this is the first test of many users in the chat room so there will probably be issues. We will also be doing server-level testing so you might get kicked out now and again or the service may abruptly close so don't take it personally ;). Your feedback on all areas of the chat from features through usability down to speed of chat responses is appreciated.

Pricing

The pricing of the chat service is yet to be announced and will be based on how many people you have in your chat room at one time. Details of the package levels and pricing will be made available at a later date. The good news is that the first chat package level will be free for active IPB license holders. We hope you enjoy that extra benefit to being a license holder.

I was asking why not to use a javascript for these corners, than it would work in every browser of the world.. css3 are still far away imo!

Adding javascript for something like that is just more overhead the browser has to process for something non-essential.

As Josh already pointed out in another thread, this functionality will be back with 3.0.2.

@Speed Racer - no need to ask (or tell) us to listen to our customers.  We always listen. :)  That doesn't mean we can always do what someone wants when they want it, but I assure you, we always listen.

#1831035 Introducing Spam Monitoring Service

Posted IPS News on 22 July 2009 - 04:07 PM

We are pleased to announce our new Spam Monitoring Service

Our new Spam Monitoring Service will assist with the ever-growing problem of spam account registrations on communities across the web. This service will use a central database, hosted by IPS, to track those that may try to register an account on your IP.Board-powered community and stop them from registering.

How it Works

Each time a user tries to register, your IP.Board will contact the service and report the IP address and email address attempting to register. The service will scan a list of known spammers and give the account a score of 1 - 4. There are various options you can configure to control what behavior happens based on the score such as banning the account, letting it through normally, or queuing it for approval.

By harnessing the power of the many thousands of IP.Board communities, the service can "learn" over time what accounts are spammers. For example, a real human could never register on 5 IP.Board communities in just one minute so the service would see that account as a probable spam account.

The service will also monitor the "mark as spam" feature now included in IP.Board. This means that, as you and your moderators manually mark an account as a spammer, the information is reported back to the service to help stop those accounts on your community and other IP.Board communities as well!

Through these methods we are creating a service that learns from the collective data gathered from all IP.Board communities who choose to participate in the Spam Monitoring Service.

spamservice.png

Privacy

IPS will collect various registration information to track and catch spam accounts. Information that is not from a spammer is only kept temporarily (to detect trends so we can catch spam accounts) then deleted. The only information permanently kept is for those known to be spammers. The service is completely optional and no IP.Board is required to participate.

Activating the Service

The Spam Monitoring Service will be available in IP.Board 3.0.2 and is already being tested here on the IPS company forums. Once you have IP.Board 3.0.2, simply login to the IPS client area and activate a special key used for the service and put that key on your IP.Board AdminCP.

Pricing

To further our continuing efforts to not only enhance the products we offer but also the services around those products: this service will be offered at no additional charge to those with an active support and service license for IP.Board and for IPS hosting customers!
