#2193765 Inviting people for a chat

Posted Bethanyrayne on 09 November 2011 - 10:34 AM

Can we have the capability to invite from the chat room anyone that is on the forum. Right now if you are in Chat on your own you can't access forum users to invite them for a chinwag.

#2255999 IP.Board & The Forum Will Be Dead Within 5 Years

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but some hard evidence rather than an opinion: http://www.google.com/trends/?q=forum

Of course, this doesn't take into account other meanings of the word "forum", but I don't see those changing in popularity too much, so it seems like this would be pretty accurate.

If that's the best we can do in terms of hard evidence that forums are declining, then I'm happy.

#2255573 IP.Board & The Forum Will Be Dead Within 5 Years

Posted bfarber on 16 April 2012 - 09:04 AM

This weekend I was searching for a movie I watched in my childhood.  Didn't know the name, the names of any actors, and only vaguely recalled some of the plot line.

I took to Google and started searching various terms I thought might help me figure out the movie.  I ultimately did find the name of the movie that I've been looking for for quite some time.

Know where I found it?  In a "What's this horror movie?" thread on a forum hosted by a horror film fan site.  The thread was still being actively posted in.  And I would have never found the name of this movie on Facebook.

I've had dozens of other similar experiences.  And when I want information on a subject, I will head to a forum about that subject.  Not to Facebook.

#2190917 Google "Page Speed" Results for IPB

Posted Matt on 03 November 2011 - 04:11 AM

Page Speed also penalises where you send an image that is then scaled by CSS. We could hack it around to please PageSpeed but the end result will not be any faster or slower to the end user.

I'm happy to implement real and proper fixes to improve speed and reduce bandwidth, but I won't be a slave to a figure produced by a calculation based on generic recommendations for websites.

#2122884 What do you think of 3.2?

I disagreed with most apart from user notes, but I'm not going through it all again, just to say topic description used by no one? Wrong, the easy solution would be to have an on/off switch for most of the above features so we can easily turn them back on. Instead you have all these complaints as they've just been taken away.

This screenshot is taken from your own forum. Please show me where a topic description has been used to impart any data that's moderately useful?

  • When you remove confusing interfaces
  • When you remove confusing or multiple settings
  • When the code is cleaner and faster as a result
  • When the skin is less cluttered and more intuitive
  • When you remove maintenance overhead
  • When you remove old and stale concepts and ideas
  • When you want to modernise a product

#2150135 IP.Board 3.2.1, IP.Calendar 3.2.1, IP.Content 2.2.1, and IP.Nexus 1.3.1 Released

Posted IPS News on 09 August 2011 - 10:38 AM

Invision Power Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of IP.Board 3.2.1, IP.Calendar 3.2.1, IP.Content 2.2.1, and IP.Nexus 1.3.1!

These releases are the first maintenance release after our highly anticipated release of IP.Board 3.2.0 and its related applications. These releases fix many reported issues.

We are releasing the following new software:

IP.Board 3.2.1
Fully featured community platform including forums, members profiles, calendar, status system, integration, and much, much more.

IP.Nexus 1.3.1
Fully featured commerce system to sell products, membership access, advertising, digital downloads, and more. Includes tools like a support desk to help manage you clients.

IP.Content 2.2.1
Content management for your community - run a full web site or a simple community portal. The possibilities are endless.

IP.Calendar 3.2.1
Event calendar for your community with multiple calendars, public/private events, and iCal support.

Release Notes
  • If you are upgrading a community with a large number of posts from version 3.1.4 or earlier you may wish to have your web host execute the post table alter query on your behalf. Large post tables may time out running this query in the browser. The upgrade system will warn you if this is needed. As a benchmark, our install of 865,000+ posts took a bit less than 3 minutes to run this query.
  • If you are upgrading from version 3.1.4 or earlier, your skin will of course need to be redone after you upgrade to 3.2.
  • The visual skin editor in 3.2 should still be considered a beta feature. It will be improved with each maintenance update.
  • Each of the applications specified above is only compatible with IP.Board 3.2 and not older versions (for example, IP.Nexus 1.3 cannot be installed on IP.Board 3.1.x).
  • We may reply to this topic with hot-fix patches or notes if any critical issues come up so please use the "Follow this Topic" feature to get notified.
  • If you experience any problems, before submitting a ticket, please disable all third party applications and hooks.
  • Please remember that IP.Calendar and IP.Chat are separate downloads in your client area.  You will need to download and upgrade these separate applications (in addition to IP.Board itself) if you wish to continue using them with IP.Board 3.2.0.

What's new in IP.Board 3.2.1

Between 3.2.0 and 3.2.1 the following changes have been made:
  • A setting has been added to restore the ability to have proportionate profile photo sizes in topic view (3.2.0 enforced cropped square thumbnails).
  • The visual skin editor has been enhanced to support more areas of the board.
  • Several enhancements have been made to the webDav integration for external skin editing.
  • More than 170 bug fixes have been implemented to IP.Board 3.2.0.
Please read our 3.2.0 announcement for a full list of what's new in the 3.2 series!

#2149837 Search - give us control!

Posted cmiller on 08 August 2011 - 10:35 PM

The search is my #1 complaint with IPB. When I click "VNC" or jump up top to search for something, I am NEVER looking to search ANYTHING, except the forums. SO... it makes no sense to have the search acting in a dynamic fashion.

I love that when we search, we see the additional options. Oh cool, let's see what new members we have, or new blog posts. Thats all good......

BUT... the search box, and VNC - these are CORE features. If we show them members just because they were just viewing a member profile, or we default the search to blogs because that's where they were when they clicked VNC.... we're limiting what they see! This goes against human behavior. When I click "view new content" I expect to see ALL NEW CONTENT! I don't pay attention to the fact that the software has decided to LIMIT my new content to "members only" or "blog posts" etc.

Can we not work on this a little bit? VNC and search both should be more user friendly. They should not DEFAULT to ANYTHING but instead show ALL relevant results with an explanation of where the content comes from.

Vbulletin handles this really well. All content is displayed in-line with different icons for each type of content.

Could IPB not do something similar?

#2095554 3.2 - Automatic image resizing in forum posts / attachments?

Posted Matt on 27 March 2011 - 03:07 AM

I added a new feature in 3.2 that allows the admin to set the maximum image size when uploading an attachment and resizes the image down if required.

#2140064 Positive Feedback, Members Like It

Posted kenichi tanaka on 25 July 2011 - 10:07 PM

First, I would like to take this time and say how impressed I've been with the new version. While there have been missteps by removing some features like the Avatar system, and with the exception of some serious hiccups, the new version is much cleaner than IPB3.1.

Second, I'm getting some positive feedback from the members of my community. While some of them are taking awhile to get used to the new software, the general impressions have been positive. Some members have even said how much they like the clean feel of the new software. While feedback is still coming in, I just thought I'd relay this to the development team.

#2116020 Welcome to IP.Board 3.2.0!

Posted IPS News on 02 June 2011 - 10:01 AM

We have upgraded the IPS Community to IP.Board 3.2.0!

This is the first step in the testing process for IP.Board 3.2.0's upcoming release. We will be testing the new version here for several weeks and working on fixing issues with the goal of our first public beta release being as stable as it can be.

Please look around and help us in testing by submitting reports to our bug tracker so we can all work together to create a stable release. Keep in mind that our applications - IP.Gallery, IP.Blog, IP.Calendar, IP.Chat, IP.Downloads, and IP.Content - have also all been updated to be compatible with IP.Board 3.2 so please also test those. Your help is greatly appreciated!

You may wish to review the What's New in IP.Board 3.2 topic for information on the exciting changes in IP.Board 3.2.

Downloading IP.Board 3.2.0

IP.Board 3.2.0 is not yet available for download.

We are using it here on our company forums both as a preview for feedback and to identify any possible issues before release. Before a final release we will be testing it here on our company forums for a few weeks and then posting betas for download for all active license holders and invite you to participate in the beta testing process when we reach that milestone. When the final, supported release is made available we will make an announcement here.

#2103726 A lot of new users can't figure out how to post an image

Posted cthree on 19 April 2011 - 01:54 PM

It's dead simple except what you've done with this is created two sites within one. People don't want to post pictures in a gallery, they want to post pictures in the forums, in posts. I don't have a forums site and gallery site. I have one site with one body of content that everyone contributes to. People use the gallery to share images with their forum friends. They aren't participating in some other Flickr-like communal image stream crap.

They want to take photos they took, upload them and then share them IN THE FORUMS. Period. Do a survey and ask people what they use the gallery for, they will tell you the same thing. The only ones who will tell you otherwise are people with no established userbase. Anyone with an established community will tell you what I said.

If something was needed it was more integration between the forums and the "topic stream" which is what people view as my content. What we got was an entirely separate application

- You can't upload images at the time you are making a forum post
- You can't select one or more uploaded images (both locally and from outside like from facebook, picasa, flickr, etc) to include in forum posts
- You can't select multiple images and have a slideshow or carousel type image browser embedded as/in a post
- You can't control how images are cropped (ala facebook) which is kinda needed if you want square thumbnails

Instead I've got a gallery section I can't control, that I can't organize, and that people can't use to do any of the things above.

I have no idea what you guys were thinking that you thought Gallery 4.0 was just what everyone needed/wanted but maybe you should change course and ask people with actual traffic what they need from a Gallery ADDON to IP.Board and then salvage what you can from this to deliver that instead.

#2054358 IPB seo, is it that good?

Posted Charles on 10 December 2010 - 04:50 PM

Your ticket was replied to many times and you never got back to our staff on the last reply so one only assumes you were happy with their reply back then (August 2010) :)

Since we are now straying from the subject at hand and into people talking about their specific account issues I am going to lock this topic.

majdi: not sure what to tell you really - your support is expired.

gary: your site has guest access DISABLED for all your forums... in that case all the SEO in the world WILL NOT help you since the spider cannot read anything to index (a spider is a guest after all). Again, not sure what you want us to tell you in that case. (Of course if you had submitted a support ticket ages ago we could have pointed out that flaw ages ago.)

To summarize:

IPB has good SEO support out of the box and the majority of clients report back generally quite hapy. No, it won't be perfect for everyone. Yes, depending on your site IPB's SEO support may help it greatly or it could potentially diminish your standing. I'm afraid that is the nature of SEO - there is no magic "turn on the SEO" button we can provide to magically make you rank in search engines.

We continue to take feedback from clients with extensive experience with SEO (to weed out those who think they know SEO from those who really do ;) - there are lots of armchair experts out there ) and will continue to enhance IPB's SEO support in future versions. We already have many features in development for the next version as we did for previous version updates.
