#2076512 What's new in IP.Board 3.2.0 and related Apps (so far)

Posted Charles on 04 February 2011 - 08:41 AM

In our spirit of keeping everyone up to date, this topic will serve as a running list of what's new in IP.Board 3.2.0. As we make changes we will update this topic so check back now and then. This is not yet a complete list as we are still making changes, adding new features, and doing other work. If you don't see what you're looking for here just yet please check back later!

As always with IPS, everything listed here is not part of a "possible" roadmap. We will only post items on this list when they are 100% complete and included in IP.Board 3.2.0 so you can trust that what we post in public is what you will get.

Calendar Improvements

Moderator Functions

New Text Editor

AdminCP

Core Functionality

Miscellaneous Changes
  • "Delete All" button has been added to the SQL error logs page
  • Linear+ and Outline modes removed for topic viewing (they're a hold-over from an older time on the web and it's time to retire them)
  • Support for IPv6
  • You can now use the member management tools to search for incomplete members
  • Pagination added to the incomplete members page of the ACP
  • If only one skin or language is choosable, the dropdown selector at the bottom of the page will be hidden
  • Member photos and member avatars are being merged into one function: member photo. There was too much overlap between the two features.
  • IP.Calendar and IP.Chat will no longer be bundled in the IP.Board download zip to reduce the size of the download. This also allows clients who have no interest in IP.Chat or IP.Calendar to choose not to download or install those applications. Of course those who do wish to use those applications can easily download from the client area and install them.
  • Rebuild FURL cache button has been moved to the cache management page.
  • It is now possible to rename the “hooks” folder to something else editing the constant IPS_HOOKS_PATH in initdata.php.
  • You can now edit each group’s report center permissions directly from the group management area
  • Report center now supports item marking to remember and indicate which reports you’ve viewed
  • Customers who have purchased Copyright Removal no longer need to enter a separate Copyright Removal key. The copyright will automatically be removed when activating your license.
  • New settings for attachments to limit size of files stored on disk
  • Separate ACP restriction options have been added for managing spam users and incomplete users (access to these areas were previously controlled by the option “can manage banned users”).
  • “Show X Last visitors in profile” now shows always the last 5 visitors if the setting is enabled rather than having a 3, 5, 10 dropdown choice.
  • New ACP tool to create the cronjobs to rebuild sphinx indexes
  • When adding a ban filter in the ACP you will now have an option to enter a reason visible to all admins (the reason won’t show in the public side).
  • Pinned, polls, and moved topic prefixes have been moved to language files (they were previously in the settings area)
  • Many redundant or pointless settings removed. Other settings moved to more logical locations. Some settings groups merged to create fewer groups to go through when setting up your community. System Settings menu item moved to a top-level menu item under System tab so it's available with one-click anywhere in AdminCP.
  • The note box in your My Settings (UserCP) area has been removed. It is a hold-over from years past and doesn't seem to make sense in community software. If you are one of the very few people who use this: make a copy of your notes before upgrade.
  • The unread topic marking system will now remember what page of a topic you left off reading rather than assume you read the entire topic on the first click.

Other Important Changes
  • IP.Subscriptions, our simple application to allow you to sell member group promotions on your community, will be updated to work with IP.Board 3.2 but this will be the last update to IP.Subscriptions. IP.Subscriptions has been around for many years - long before communities were assumed to bring in revenue - and it's time to retire it to focus on our more modern application: IP.Nexus. With the release of IP.Board 3.2, IP.Subscriptions will be considered end of life (EOL) and will no longer be supported. Clients should switch to the new IP.Nexus product which is continually updated and contains many more opportunities to monetize your community. A member of our community, Andy Rixon, has agreed to take on continuing development of this product so those of you who use it will still have a solution.
  • The Portal application in IP.Board has existed from the very early days of our company. It was only ever intended as a simple portal and demo of the software but grew a bit over time. It has had minimal updates and the feature set is very minimal when compared to today's expectations of community owners and operators. The Portal application will not ship with IP.Board 3.2 and should be considered EOL. It will be available in the IPS Marketplace after IP.Board 3.2's release for those of you who do use it so you can still upgrade to 3.2. We will also post information on how to easily replicate the Portal's functionality in IP.Content which offers all that the old Portal did and much, much more. A member of our community, Andy Rixon, has agreed to take on continuing development of this product so those of you who use it will still have a solution.
  • As IP.Board 3.2 will have a whole new default skin, the CleanCut skin will become redundant and will therefore no longer be updated by IPS.

#1963904 "Votebox" like feature

Posted Luke on 03 June 2010 - 02:46 PM

Do you remember the days when there was a forum for reporting bugs? You know, before the bug tracker? Well the bug tracker has definitely helped out in making bug tracking more efficient.... But feature suggestions are still kept in the feedback forum. A few dozen people may reply to it, but that topic quickly fades away. A suggestion isn't really taken seriously unless enough people post other topics suggesting the same thing, or staff take particular interest in a suggestion. Another problem is that people tend to lump multiple suggestions in one topic.

What I'm suggesting is a new community project, or extension to the existing tracker, for suggesting features, much like Votebox, which is Dropbox's customized feature tracking system.

Since you have to be logged in to see it I've taken a screen shot below:

votebox.png

The way they're system works is someone makes a single suggestion and people vote on it. The ones with the highest votes are at the top, and ones that are accepted/done get filtered out. They give their customers 5 votes total towards a particular feature that they want most. Later on they can choose to cancel that vote and put it towards another suggestion, or it's returned to them when a feature is accepted/completed. (There may be some details I may have gotten slightly wrong, but you get the general gist of it).

It would be a great way to gauge what people want most. Limiting how many votes each customer gets allows them to vote for what they want most (otherwise people would vote for everything, and then it would be pointless).

(If the same feature is suggested twice there should be a way to merge them together)

Would be more efficient than "+1 or Yes I agree!" stuff.

#1922336 Feature Requests

Posted pjohansson2 on 07 March 2010 - 02:06 PM

Is it possible to have a hook to the right of mainforum, like a lightversion of the chat so users reading the board also could see/write in in chat like latest status hook?

In addition to the core software, the following products and services are also available:

Downloading

You can download these releases in the client area and begin enjoying the new features.

Release Notes

  • We have had three beta releases for testing and are confident any major issues have been addressed. However, as this is the first supported release that will be used by thousands of people, there could be as yet undiscovered issues. Please report issues in the bug tracker.

  • Important technical support note: During the launch of the new products, and the great interest they will create, support response times (especially for install or upgrade requests) may be delayed. We appreciate your understanding during the launch time. If your community is critical in nature and even the slightest delay in support services would impact you then you may wish to wait until version 3.1.1 to upgrade.

  • If you are upgrading from IP.Board 3.0.x then please note that, although this is not a destructive upgrade, you may need to manually update any skins you have using the new merge center to add the new functionality. You may also need to update any custom applications or hooks to use some new file locations. Technical support from IPS for skins is limited. When in doubt contact the author of the skin or use the default skin that ships with IP.Board.

  • If you are currently using Facebook Connect integration, you will now need to add your Facebook application ID into the system settings. Please see this article for more information.

  • Legacy chat services Addonchat and Parachat are no longer supported from version 3.1 onwards. If you are using these older services and wish to continue doing so: do not upgrade to version 3.1 at this time. You may wish to consider switching to our new IP.Chat service.

  • Keep in mind that all the new application versions also require IP.Board 3.1 to operate. Do not try to use them on older versions of IP.Board.

Version 3.1.1 Coming Soon

IPS is dedicated to promptly fixing any reported issues and will do so with the release of version 3.1.1 soon after 3.1.0's release. You may also wish to keep an eye on our knowledge base where we will release patches for any critical issues that come up between the two version releases.

As defined in the release notes: because this is the first widely-distributed release there will be as yet undiscovered issues. You can expect a maintenance release, IP.Board 3.1.1 (and other application maintenance releases), in the next two to three weeks (around mid-June) to address issues reported in this first supported release. We appreciate your understanding and hope you can assist us in identifying any problems in this first supported release so we can quickly remedy them in our next update.

We are happy to announce a new promotion specifically for our loyal, existing customers. This promotion will allow you to fill in the gaps in your IPS community suite licenses at a discounted price.

New customers can get a discount based on how many IP.Board applications they purchase when they order. However, these discounts have not been available to existing customers who might wish to pick up application licenses they do not have to complete their IPS suite lineup.

Anyone with a current, active IP.Board license (Standard/Business/Perpetual/Lifetime) will be able to purchase the following applications at the reduced price listed:

#1871371 UCP Suggestions

Posted Wolf on 25 October 2009 - 02:11 PM

I have some suggestions that I would love to see implemented in the UCP in the future; these suggestions are both original and derived from other forum software. I hope to see some added in the future!

UCP Layout
I don't think the tabbed layout works that well with the UCP. I like the fact that there are tabs, but I don't like the fact the layout revolves around them. I like the old style of the left-hand-side options. Possibly some AJAX for expanding and contracting them, and maybe still use tabs a bit? It's sometimes complex to understand which tab something is on (profile & settings get confused alot) etc; also, make common features accessable easily (possibly an optional dashboard?)

Profile Field Privacy/Private Profiles
I've noticed this feature in vB, and I fell in-love with it. I know that IPB is trying to stay away from becoming a massive scattered social network platform, but this is a feature I see as very useful; especially in the area of hiding contact details for only friends to see; and for preventing ignored users from viewing areas of the profile/posting messages. I strongly support implimenting this into IPB3

Those are my main concerns, also, there are some posted on this thread (CUSTOMER/STAFF ACCESS ONLY, SORRY).

I hope to see these added soon!

#1870922 VBULLETIN USERS WORRIED ABOUT SKINNING

Posted Nityananda on 24 October 2009 - 09:28 AM

OK guys,
I am currently running a vbulletin forum with a professional design set. My first and foremost worry about moving over to invision was the design of my forum. My thought behind this is that it is going to be a big enough move over to invision as it stands without the fact that the forum will look completely different.

NOW, bare in mind I only purchased invision less than 24 hours ago. I have almost managed to duplicate the look of my forum with only a very very basic knowledge of CSS and some knowledge of photoshop. How have I done this? I would seriously urge you to have a good read through the topic on this forum http://www.smartestc...showtopic=37422

This tutorial, I would print out and have at the side of you throughout your transition. Its simple, and it works...... Dont worry about your skinning guys. IMO its easier than vbulletin 3.8 and at the end of the day, you would have to learn 4.0 anyways.

#1870828 Our forums are offline! - IPS driver error

Posted Mike John on 24 October 2009 - 12:37 AM

For serious issues like this, it's probably best to open a support ticket, you should see a checkbox when opening your ticket for critical issues. While you wait for an IPS response, you could also post your ips driver error that other customers might be able to help with in the peer to peer support forums . You can get the exact IPS driver error in the forums/cache/ folder and find a file like this sql_error_log_##_##_##.cgi (replacing ##_##_## for month_day_year).

#1869340 Volume Pricing and Application Renewal Changes

Posted IPS News on 20 October 2009 - 02:31 PM

The special offer referenced below has expired.

Reposting from previous announcement as a reminder to all current and prospective customers...

Community Suite Promotion

The current Community Suite package offered for sale on our web site has been available for quite some time and features a bundled deal to purchase IP.Board, IP.Gallery, and IP.Blog all at once. It has been a great way for customers to purchase those products at once for a discount. However, the package was introduced before we had other products like IP.Downloads, IP.Content, and more.

The downside is that some clients want to mix-and-match from our various product line yet the Community Suite is the three products listed with no other options. It also becomes difficult as IPS adds more to our product line.

Therefore, starting November 2, 2009, we will be discontinuing the Community Suite purchase option. On that date it will be replaced with a discount option based on the simple premise of the more products you purchase at once then the greater your package discount grows. It's only fair to offer a greater discount based on your purchase volume while still offering you flexibility to choose which products you want. We will have information about this on our web site when available in November.

Last Chance to Purchase Community Suite

If you are interested in our Community Suite be sure to order before November 2 to lock in the price and the renewal offers.

Pricing Benefits

Ordering products (Board/Blog/Gallery) separately: $264.97 up front plus $100 per year for support/services/upgrades
Ordering products through Community Suite: $249.99 up front plus $50 per year for support/services/upgrades

Special IPS Product Line Offer

Until November 2, we are also offering a special for those wishing to purchase the entire IPS product line. If you are interested in all that's offered under the Community Suite (Board/Blog/Gallery) plus IP.Downloads and IP.Content you can purchase all of these products for just an additional $50 (total of $299.99 for all) on top of the Community Suite price. That's a savings of $50 compared to buying separately. Standard renewal terms apply. Purchase special offer... it is only available by reading this announcement - not mentioned anywhere on our web site!

#1869338 Volume Pricing and Application Renewal Changes

Posted IPS News on 20 October 2009 - 02:29 PM

Today we are announcing several price changes including volume pricing, renewal term changes, and a renewal price reduction.

Renewal Term Changes

As all of our clients know, our IP.Board licenses renew every 6 months to continue support, upgrades, and services for the licenses. However, our applications (IP.Blog, IP.Gallery, IP.Downloads, and IP.Content) all renew just once a year. This yearly renewal is a leftover policy from previous license setups that were just yearly renewals.

To make everything match, we are changing all application renewal terms to match the 6 month term for IP.Board licenses. It is important to note that we are not raising the actual prices but the frequency of the renewal period so everything is the same. This change will make managing your licenses with IPS much easier for both you and our staff. Example: IP.Blog renewal is currently $20 per year whereas it will now be $10 every 6 months.

IP.Gallery Renewal Reduction

Currently IP.Gallery is $30 per year for the renewal fees. We are now lowering this to $10 every 6 months to match IP.Blog and IP.Downloads. As this is a price reduction we have credited all customers with currently active IP.Gallery licenses with a 3 month extension to their term. Note that this does not apply to Community Suite licenses as those licenses have free renewals for IP.Gallery already included.

Volume Pricing

It has been requested and we are now happy to announce volume pricing for customers wishing to purchase multiple IP.Board licenses. If you have at least two full-price, active licenses for IP.Board then you will now be able to purchase discounted Standard licenses for just $99.00. Renewal fees will remain the normal price. For customers who purchase more than 25 licenses, their price drops to $49.00.

As with any great deal there are terms and conditions. To qualify for purchasing additional licenses at a discounted price: you must have two full-price licenses (Standard, Business, or Community Suite licenses qualify) with their support and service renewal ($25/6 month) paid plus any existing discounted licenses must also have their support and service renewal paid as well. Applications will also be offered at discounted prices if they are associated with a discounted IP.Board license. Discount pricing for applications will be available in the client area and will range from $30 - $50 depending on the application.

We hope you enjoy the new flexibility of 6 month renewals, the less expensive IP.Gallery renewals, and the options for volume pricing!

#1867725 IP.Chat Service Testing

Posted Charles on 16 October 2009 - 04:31 PM

We are investigating the possibility of offering a chat service for IPB directly from IPS.

This chat service would run inside of your IPB install much like Gallery or Blog however the actual exchange of chat messages would be handled by IPS servers. The high volume of transactions needed for a chat room would probably get you banned from most web hosting providers and, even if you have high-end hosting, it requires a specially tuned server to perform well. You can forget that headache and let us handle the transactions. Chat room statistics and access to log archives will of course be available for owners.

Testing

For the time being, we will only have the chat room open here on our company forums when an IPS staff member opens it. We are looking to test both the interface you use for chatting and the back-end server performance so we need online staff to monitor both sides of the exchange. So keep an eye for the chat link to appear in the top navigation or a "who's chatting" area to show up on the home page under statistics. When you see this then you know the room is available for testing :)

Please post bugs in the bug tracker under the IP.Chat category. You can post feedback here in the feedback forum or just reply to this topic. Please keep in mind this would be a version 1.0.0 so, although we can add all sorts of cool stuff over time, we are focusing on a nice, stable chat room right now. Things like private conversations, multiple rooms, and more are on our list but we must perfect the base chat room before adding on all the extras.

Please note that this is the first test of many users in the chat room so there will probably be issues. We will also be doing server-level testing so you might get kicked out now and again or the service may abruptly close so don't take it personally ;). Your feedback on all areas of the chat from features through usability down to speed of chat responses is appreciated.

Pricing

The pricing of the chat service is yet to be announced and will be based on how many people you have in your chat room at one time. Details of the package levels and pricing will be made available at a later date. The good news is that the first chat package level will be free for active IPB license holders. We hope you enjoy that extra benefit to being a license holder.

Sort of - there are some moderation controls in the UserCP for things like announcements, and searching IP addresses. Generally though, we went in favor of inline moderation - i.e. moderation controls being available in the logical place they're needed. So when you view a member profile there's an option to edit it there. When you view the topic listing you can edit each individual topic title right there, and so forth. Our moderation controls integrate seamlessly with your usual browsing of the forum :)

#1866777 vBulletin Owners: Handy FAQs

Posted Matt on 15 October 2009 - 02:30 AM

Due to the increased interest in our products from vBulletin users over the past few days, I thought it would be convenient to collect pertinent information in one place and give you an overview of who we are and what we do.

About Invision Power Services
We've been creating forum software for over seven years. We work closely with our community and we're very open about our development and we're all very active on this forum. Our customers range from small focused communities through to Skype, Vodafone, EMI, Sony and more. We take pride in our customer service and treat all feedback equally.

Our Products
We offer many community products and services:
IP.Board
IP.Board has come on leaps and bounds since the early days of 1.3 and 2.0. We've invested heavily into development and the result is on your screen now. A feature set overview is available. It has a built in report center, reputation system and warning system. It also extends the classic PM system into personal conversations that enable you to host private topics rather than a simple email-like PM conversation. It is very extensible with its new hooks system and applications framework. Not forgetting it's incredibly easy to write your own single sign on code or log in module to allow single sign on with your existing website or systems. It also ships with log in integration for OpenID, LDAP, Windows Live and Facebook.

IP.Board also has many SEO tools built in. It allows for customizable 'friendly URLs' with proper 301 redirect headers is tampering is attempted. It also offers meta keywords and descriptions automatically populated based on post content. 301 redirects from standard 'old' URLS (showtopic=xxx) and more.

IP.Board is available for $149.99. This entitles you to run the board indefinitely (for life). You get six months access to technical support, services (Spam monitoring) and to download the latest version of the software. Once that six months is up you can optionally renew for another six months for $25.00. You can allow your renewal to lapse without penalty and renew at any time.

Licenses are not tied to versions so, for example, if you purchased IP.Board in 2006 and now want to renew for $25; you'll be able to download IP.Board 3.0.

We offer one installation completely free and we can upgrade the board for you when requested. 30 days telephone support is also included free of charge. You will also get access to our peer-to-peer customer only forums. It's worth noting though that all our feedback from customers is in this public forum. We don't try and hide it, good or bad.

We also offer a "Business License" - the main difference being that phone support is included while your license is active (not just for the first 30 days). The Business License is $349 and renewals are $50 per 6 months. As with the Standard license, it is not tied to a version and you can let it lapse and renew whenever you like.

IP.Board and its applications require PHP 5.1+ (although we recommend 5.2+) and MySQL 4.1+ or MSSQL 2003+ (MSSQL driver available for an additional $60). IP.Board is just as happy on apache as it is in IIS.

IP.Content
IP.Content is our new community content system. We have avoided labeling it as a CMS as this gives certain expectation. IP.Content can do many things inlcuding pulling content from your forum to display on your home page. More information on IP.Content is available here and here.

Charles put together two short videos to help illustrate what it can do:

It's worth mentioning those videos were taken during a beta of the first version. The next version adds much more functionality. Information available here.

Other Products
We also offer the following:
IP.Converge
IP.Converge is our innovative authentication system that enables separate applications to centrally authenticate users, and optionally share data such as profiles. IP.Converge works with all IPS products, and third-party products such as Wordpress and Joomla. It effectively provides a central log in system that all your applications can use so that your members only need one username and password. It does not need to be on the same server, either so you can link up a dozen IP.Boards from all over the internet if you wished.
IP.Converge is free to all IPS customers.

IP.Subscriptions
This is an application for your IP.Board that allows you to sell subscriptions to your members. It is based on elevating permissions via the member group system. It works with PayPal, Sage and Authorize.net. PayPal allows for recurring payments.
IP.Subscriptions is a free application for all IPS customers.

Spam Service
Even with a good CAPTCHA, communities are seeing a rise in human spammers that can bypass all "anti-bot" systems. There is no real way to automate protection against these spammers other than to learn and block them and that's precisely what this system does.
Each IP.Board has a feature to "Flag a user as a spammer". This will unapprove all their recent posts and flag them as a spammer in the Admin CP. It also sends a ping back to us with their email address and IP address. If enough people report the same details, they are marked as a spammer. You can then set your board to not allow these users, or manually review them before validating the account.
It's an incredibly effective tool and it's caught many dozens of spammers on this site alone.

The spam service is free to all active standard license holders.

IP.Tracker
This is a community developed free application for IP.Board that adds project tracking to your forum. We use it ourselves here.

IP.Shoutbox
This is a community developed free application for IP.Board that adds a shoutbox to your forum.

Modifications and Skins
IP.Board has a very healthy modifications and skinning community. There are many independent skinning and modification websites dedicated to IP.Board. We also maintain a list of resources here. IP.Board 3 is a new product but the modification authors are gaining traction and making use of the new systems to product easy to install modifications. There are modifications for donating via PayPal, arcades and more.

Please list any modifications you have and we'll try and match them up with IP.Board equivalents.

Conversions

We can convert your data from vBulletin, including converting vB Blog to IP.Blog, and the albums feature in vBulletin to IP.Gallery. If you use the popular Photopost gallery, we can convert that as well.
Almost every piece of data can be converted - and members will be able to log in with the same username and password they did on vBulletin.

Posted Image

You needn't worry about broken links after you convert either, we have some redirection scripts that will take users from your old vBulletin URLs to the new URLs on IP.Board - so if members follow links from search engines, they'll still be shown the right content on your community.

There are two ways to convert: firstly, you can download the free converter scripts on the conversions page and use them yourself, or you can purchase our conversion service and one of our technicians will handle everything for you.
The conversion service costs $120.
It's important to note that the free converters will only work with vBulletin version 3.8 - if you're not using 3.8 you should either first upgrade your vBulletin installation before converting, or if you purchase the conversion service we'll handle everything for you.

If you have any special requirements such as merging multiple forums - please contact sales@invisionpower.com and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Please feel free to reply. I'll maintain this post to add more information if required.
