#2156182 Change "Error" to "Sorry, You Can't Do This" or Something

You can change this in the language files if you don't like the term "error".

#2105304 Suggestion 3.2: Menu

Posted Kenneth. on 24 April 2011 - 09:21 PM

Hello, it is possible to make a dropdown menu tutorial for 3.2, or just make a drop down, and let members decide to use it or not(if they do, they can add links and so on)?. :P

#2086569 IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Released

Posted IPS News on 04 March 2011 - 03:59 AM

Invision Power Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of IP.Gallery 4.0.0!

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 is the latest version of our popular Gallery application. It has been completely rewritten to modernize the interface and to add better functionality. Everyone here at IPS is very excited at this new release and hope our customers will enjoy the update to this popular application.

Over the course of development, we've kept a blog on its development and we invite you to review the entries:

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Manifesto
IP.Gallery 4.0 is a huge upgrade; the single biggest upgrade it has ever seen. We're blasting out the cobwebs and introducing a slick new interface that never loses sight of what a Gallery should be. We're simplifying permissions and accessibility to remove the clutter and confusion. We want you to fall in love with Gallery again.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Structural Changes
I want to completely re-focus Gallery and make the media the center of the application. I want users to view the images without being so concerned as to where they belong. I want to focus on organic discovery over being forced to browse pages of user albums or pages of categories.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 View Image Page Tour
I have taken a short video to explain some of the larger changes and features of this page for Gallery 4.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Uploading Tour
Arguably the most crucial part of the gallery system is the upload system. A cumbersome and slow upload system deters people from uploading new images.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Interface Tour
I wanted to take a moment to run through the interface and explain a little more about the album types we have in IP.Gallery now.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Media Uploading Tour
You can upload videos alongside normal photos and quickly add a thumbnail to the video. If you upload a m4v, certain mov files and flv files, these are played in a Flash video player much like YouTube.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Mobile Skin
The mobile theme is lightweight as expected and makes good use of the small cropped thumbs as well as the new 'small' image that is created. This saves a lot of bandwidth which will be a huge relief to those that don't have a good 3G signal.

Release Notes

  • If you are using IP.Content blocks that use Gallery data, please wait until IP.Gallery 4.0.1 for the updated IP.Content integration

  • We have had several beta releases for testing and are confident any major issues have been addressed. However, as this is the first supported release that will be used by thousands of people, there could be as yet undiscovered issues. Please report issues in the bug tracker.

  • Important technical support note: During the launch of a new products, and the great interest created, support response times (especially for install or upgrade requests) may be delayed. We appreciate your understanding during the launch time. If your community is critical in nature and even the slightest delay in support services would impact you then you may wish to wait until a future version to use IP.Gallery.

  • IP.Gallery requires IP.Board 3.1.4 and will not install on prior versions.

  • MSSQL driver files are still in development and not available with IP.Gallery 4.0.0

  • If your server uses ImageMagick (rather than GD) for image manipulation please wait for IP.Gallery 4.0.1.

Upgrading
IP.Gallery 4.0.0 has a built in upgrade system to upgrade your current IP.Gallery. However, please understand that this is a very large update and the interface has changed completely. We strongly recommend that you read the blog entries or test the Gallery installation on this site to ensure that all the functionality you need is available and the new interface suits your needs. If you have a gallery-centric site you may wish to wait for a future version. Please use the feedback forum for any discussion on the new functionality.

Version 4.0.1 Coming Soon

IPS is dedicated to promptly fixing any reported issues and will do so with the release of IP.Gallery version 4.0.1 very soon.

As mentioned in the release notes: because this is the first widely-distributed release there will be as yet undiscovered issues. You can expect several maintenance releases over the next several weeks. We appreciate your understanding and hope you can assist us in identifying any problems in this first supported release so we can quickly remedy them in our next updates.

#2075751 So far, disappointed by how far Gallery 4 misses the mark

Posted Matt on 02 February 2011 - 08:01 AM

Regarding better integration with the forum, this is going to have to wait until 3.2 is out.

I've taken a look at it would require 4 or 5 hooks to implement something right now and then it could only store a copy of the image which may not be desirable. I also considered a "Insert Gallery images into Post" button but the text editor is being replaced in 3.2 so it seems folly writing something that will probably only be useful for a few months.

I'd rather wait for 3.2 then release an update that has much improved integration using the proper tools that are future proof.

Lord All Mighty..

User Experience > Administrative Experience, your site is for your users NOT you..  In terms about crying about the water marking, simply edit the code to either NOT save duplicates or run a CRON job nightly to delete the originals... Oh look problem solved, and you can stop demanding something be re-worked around your personal want's & desires..  If it's that big of a stick up your *cough* do not upgrade, it's that simple, Gallery3 does not have any massive security faults that mandate the need to

Initial visions change as they write the application, it's as they've now mentioned... a very early beta, ignoring this fact shows how short sighted the "Administrator" is, and not the Programmer

#2072761 Gallery 4!

Posted Ohn03s on 25 January 2011 - 06:11 PM

I sincerely hope that IPS won't rush it to much - I prefer a stable product and this is a major rewrite. I prefer a delay above some huge exploit at a rushed product that is also un-useable :)

#2071192 Gallery Updates

Posted Tigratrus on 21 January 2011 - 10:43 PM

The single burning question that I think we should be asking is:

What about integration with the forums, when will we be able to readily use images and albums in the gallery IN the forums to facilitate the conversation?

Having images added as attachements in forums posts because that's soooooo much easier than using the reusable, searchable images in the gallery... Well, as a community builder, I cry every time I see people upload a really good image as an attachment because I know it'll be buried in that thread and never show up in the search system, never be seen by anyone looking through the gallery for that sort of image.  It's a nigh-criminal waste of sometimes priceless UGC.  With everyone carrying a smartphone, images are an ever increasing part of the conversation, and the gallery should be becoming more and more of a gestalt with the forums rather than a more or less separate, parallel system.

Soooooo...

I really hope that this new release carries with it the ability to quickly and easily upload images to the gallery while in the forum post editor, and to use albums and images in a forum post.  it should be an easy, seamless experience.  Images/media belong in the gallery not as attachments ;).

Thanks for all the other awesome improvements to the gallery! :)

I've fixed this for Gallery 4.0

You'll note the scroll bar and also the little minimize toggle button to the right.

#2002709 Why IPC is failing

Alright. Well here it is.

If it seems like I bounce around a lot, it is because I do. My brain rummages through everything first, then dives in.

Thanks,

Hi, I posted this question earlier. Is anyone able to answer it? I'm very eager to see 4.0 but worried all the work I have done may be for nothing.

Thanks in advance :).

Your categories will be 'converted' during the upgrade, so you'll be fine. :)

*thinks Matt is just holdin off on tellin  us about the easy to use forum posting of multiple images so that our bowing down to him doesnt disturb his work too early :P

It is probably the #1 requested feature so we'd be mad to ignore it.

There is actually an article to tell you about it, but I just typed up one to be more like an actual walk through beyond what is already shown.

It's not like what you are wanting, but hopefully it's enough to give you the working tools (knowledge) for being able to proceed on your own.

#1939281 From Internet Brands to Invision Power Services

I will say there are two things that you will see when you research IPB.

Dedication and Innovation

Dedication to Customers
I had been a VB customer since 2004 and purchased the presale suite they offered at a discount in November.  It is unfortunate that VB4 failed in so many aspects that I never upgraded my community after installing a test board.  Buggy release after buggy release have come and VB4 still has not reached the quality that its predecessors had.  I have watched the Epic Meltdown between frustrated long time customers and the current staff at vBulletin Solutions.

I have watched the 3.1 beta rollout here at IPS.  Many, many blog posts about new features.  After the initial 3.1 beta was running live here, IPS did something else.  They took feedback.  They listened.  They retooled.  There was no feeling of "that's the way it is."

Now on to IPS' presale.  They did a presale while 3.1 was running on their site.  Holy cow, what a concept.  Not only did they run the presale, they backdated the presale a half a month for people who have recently purchased.

Innovations in Features and Design.
I never thought IPS would spring ahead of VB in terms of core functionality and design.  Now, it seems VB is attempting to play catch up with IPS.  If you have the ablity to read posts from VB's Licensed Customer Feedback (in their forums), you will read things like "Why not do (X) the way IPB has done it." or "IPB has been doing (X) and I really like it."

Never mind the overall navbar and sidebar scheme have been duplicated by VB, now social network integration is coming too.

I have always prided myself and my community on Innovation and Design.  Thanks to IPS, I still have a company that aligns with the same core values.  Posted Image

Actually, and if anyone happens to care, the corporate structure is:

Matt: Chairman and CSA
Lindy: CEO
Me: President

I make them play hail to the chief when I enter the room but (other than that) really titles are pretty meaningless. We all do what needs to be done and all have our specific roles we play.

Thank you for your feedback. We're not perfect and make mistakes all the time but I think our biggest advantage is that we realize that and are happy to say "you're right" if something needs to be changed.
