#2260847 IP Gallery - It's driven us away from IPS to the competition

#2260704 IP Gallery - It's driven us away from IPS to the competition

First, let me say that we've purchased over 50 IPB licenses over the years.  It's been great to see how the forum software has developed over the years since we started using it. . .from 2.1.7 to 3.3.1, IPB has proven time after time to be stable, reliable and rock solid.

Second, IPS support is top notch - there isn't another company out there that matches the quality of their work and service.

Thirdly, the community here that supports each other with technical help and the people that offer both paid and free hooks/applications are superb.

With that being said though, IP Gallery is what has stopped us from further purchasing more IPB licenses. In fact, we've moved some of our current sites away from IPB to competing software.

The gallery is such an important part of a community and IP Gallery simply does not live up to a publishers or a users expectations. I'm not going to rehash here what's wrong with IP Gallery because it's been discussed over and over again.

It's obviously not economically in our best interests to leave a license "idle", purchase "redundant" software AND change everything around, but IP Gallery just doesn't cut it.

We've waited and waited for an improved version of IP Gallery, but had to move on.

I think we should have a torn shirt that says "Charles broke it..."

I find the current documentation, tips, system to be very frustrating. I wish all of this information would just be made into the forums in a documentation category. The method now is just sloppy looking and scattered. Or to make things real nice/simple/easy/clean make a pdf file. One that could be easily obtained, and I could put in a staff folder on my site so my moderators/staff could read it and understand better the features better. Exactly like the previous pdf file from the 2.x days. That was perfect, and didn't require navigating all over a website. It could be easily accessed from your site or mine for learning the features.

Revisions could be made as things change.
A PDF file, or at least a single searchable source -- not two or three different places to search. (Forums, Resources, docs, phpDocs...)

#1991004 Status updates with mobile skin

Posted Interferon on 21 July 2010 - 10:56 AM

The mobile skin should have a box to type a status update.  It would be perfect, my users could just type into their phones about what they're doing.

While I don't really think status update in the mobile skin is necessary, not doing it because it's in the mobile app isn't really the best reason IMO. I imagine a significantly less portion of mobile users will be using the app compared to those who access it via their mobile browser.

#1989245 Purchase IP.Board but can't download

The fact there isn't someone there to approve invoices on the weekend kinda sucks...

#1986785 OMG, another manual thread! :O

Posted ZakRhyno on 13 July 2010 - 08:11 PM

Okay once a upon a time I got a link to error codes look up on the resource page from IPB staff, now I go their to look it up and it all gone. Hard to find were the information is. I love when things are move and their is no link to were it goes, so I go do a search for error codes. I get nothing in my return results. So I put "error codes" still get nothing but error is over 1000 so it not going to use the word. Lovely even the system say ha ha. Okay, I'm now royally T-Off, document their seems to so much of it but yet the structure of how it is apply to IPB it not good.

I keep getting "we update are articles," "how can we improve on it," "just look in the resource side," or even "just post on the forums." Okay for people whom are of the higher coder knowledge and well around people whom know PHP, server stuff, skinning, AJax, and many other things that runs that might be good but for people who want are on the starting level, how are learning were that is, how to install this. The current set up don't work!  But, "how can we improve on this," truly lesson to the customer and do more then one side of the customer pool. Right now the IP Nexus will be going out soon, that great! the blogs were neat. the hype was great, but!, I bet you when it comes out it like how do you this or that with very little to how to do anything with in the system or a manual on how to do stuff within the system. I get the idea of the most of to date information is on IPB which is find but stuff should be ship out with IPB board and products.

Example is error codes, I would LOVE to type in my error code and pop it tells me right in my little board what I need to do or know so I know what to do next, BUT, I come here and search for 30 minuties to find out I have to follow a link to a link to a question then to another link to find the main place that will answer my question. Their have been post before about the topic but IPB Staff have yet to give us any information about anything that would help the end user whos trying to understand the very product that was sold to them that was so great. Don't get me wrong IPB has gone leaps and bounds in the last year but not what really needs to be done. If the problem is staff does this or does that then higher one person to just do the main help articles in details, with pictures, laymen terms etc. I'm not just speaking for myself but others who have +1 me in the pass under other documents request thread.

I will push and post the same issue as before, lack of document for the beginner to novice is lacking in details and information. Not trying to get the hands down to IPB butvBulletin already got this done and IPB needs to get on ball if they want to out do VBulletin which they have been doing but more need to be done. Come on step up and get a hit and please stop striking out.

Zak

#1984245 Lots of Gallery suggestions

Posted absentee on 08 July 2010 - 03:18 PM

First off, it NEEDS the flash uploader used by IP.Board. It's kind of backwards that the gallery is the system with the inefficient uploader, considering it's purpose is to handle images uploaded.

Second, I think it needs an option, similar to the forum or gallery view, to use AJAX to display an image on the album page instead of navigating away to a separate image page. So a medium sized image would be displayed above the thumbnails of all the images in the album, the image show would be whichever thumbnail was clicked. The Image Information box on the image view page could be put into an expandable box, and also updated with AJAX when a user selects an image from the thumbnails below. Arrows should be to the left and right of the image to go to previous or next images. Lightbox could be used when clicking on the medium sized image (the selected image) on the page to view a full size version of the image. If all of the image information was contained in an image box then the information such as rating, views, user, etc could be stripped from the thumbnails and put on the information box.

Speaking of lightbox, I found a way to make the lightbox Automatically Resize, and would like to see this implemented by default. Normally, when viewing a photo larger than the screen resolution, it extends past the browser window edge and the user needs to scroll to see the full image. This has greatly improved usability on my site, as lightbox works as intended now for large images on my site
(note: I had to combine the included lightbox.js and the one downloaded above to work, it didn't work with the new JS)

Integration with IP.Nexus would be ideal, so that users may purchase prints of a photo or something like that.

Minor details on the page are less important because they can be changed in a skin, but these options are necessary for the gallery to work in a professional manner.
Documentation for skinning would be great too! Things such as how to include an image thumbnail, full, or medium size on the page, etc.

All of these features would give gallery a much more polished and finished feel when using it, and a smoother user experience on the site.

#1975344 Gallery Navigation

Posted Jυra on 20 June 2010 - 08:48 PM

I'd kill for some navigation controls to go along with a navigation overhaul of IP Gallery.
