#2254924 Tell warned users how to acknowledge their warning

Posted Feld0 on 15 April 2012 - 06:20 AM

This has turned into quite the issue on one of my communities since we started making use of the revamped warning system in IPB 3.3. My moderators and I love being able to force a warned user to acknowledge their warning before they can post again.

But... warned members seem to be almost unanimously confused when the quick editor disappears, and very few of them think to try the "Reply to this topic" button at the top of the page.

The inherent issue here is that our users are so accustomed to using the quick reply box, they don't know what to do or what's wrong when it vanishes upon the receipt of a warning. Cue a private message to a moderator or a status update proclaiming "I can't post anymore! Why?"

I see two ways to address this:

1) Completely block off the user's access to the community until they have acknowledged the warning. E.g.: whenever they try to access anything, put the warning in their face and ask them to acknowledge it. Has the major advantage of being impossible to miss, and keeping users from submitting content to any area of the site until they acknowledge it (what's to stop user warned for swearing excessively on the forums from swearing in the comments of a calendar entry, with the current setup?). And frankly, if a user received a warning, I want that warning to be the very first thing they see next time they visit my site.

2) Display something in the quick editor's place upon the receipt of a warning. Ex.: "You have recently received a warning. You must acknowledge it before you are able to post again." Might work, but it would require a template modification which could prove a hassle for all the skin designers who just updated their 3.2 skins to 3.3. From an administrative point of view, I think this is also less desirable than effectively giving the user a ban that they are able to lift themselves (that's what option #1 accomplishes, in a nutshell).

This seems like a simple UI/UX oversight, but it creates unnecessary work for moderators that can easily be handled by the software with one of the above changes.

#2265468 Rich text editor

Posted Traaginen on 09 May 2012 - 10:27 PM

I'll preface this by saying that I'm a fan of the RTE when it works(ed).

Sorry to say it, but I'm going to pile on with this RTE hate. The current version is just horribly, horribly buggy. I would submit bug reports to the tracker... but honestly, there are just so many things wrong with it right now it doesn't seem worth the time. The [list] is broken and wraps itself around unrelated text, removes [*] randomly, and it's absolutely impossible to align/justify anything if it has text above and/or below it. Etc, etc.

Main thing I dont like about auto saved reply is apparently it never clears itself and remains there forever.

This was a bug that has been partially fixed in 3.2.1 and completely fixed in 3.2.2.

Trash can in 3,2,1?

There is the Mod CP which shows deleted content. If you really really wanted to keep a trash can, then set up a multi-moderation for it and remove all delete permissions for your moderators. It's the very same thing.

If simply using a url is a security risk we wouldn't be able to have links in the posts themselves.  How could someone do anythign any more risky by giving a lnik in one place as opposed to another?

No other system (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) allows URL avatars anymore. They are too unpredictable. I know many will now reach for "BUT THIS ISN'T FACEBOOK". I agree with that but my comparison is now down to user expectations. The average user is more comfortable with uploading an image than finding the URL.

The main reason it was removed is because it is a small security risk. We had to stop showing a user's avatar in the Admin CP because of the risks of it redirecting to another page. We have a lot of protection against that within the forum, but less so in the Admin CP because it's behind a separate log in.

Ultimately, we have simplified the forum and removed a lot of legacy features. I don't expect everyone to cheer with approval, but when you lead the pack, you make tough decisions for the good of the product.

I fully expect the grumpy minority to now dissect this post completely. :)
