About Me
I'm a 27 year old Zend-certified PHP developer working for Invision Power Services, Inc. I've been here since 2005 and every year just gets better and better.
When I'm not working I like to play video games, watch movies, read, and spend time with my family (pets included). This shot is a couple years old, but is still a favorite.

For my site, ip.downloads is the core of my offering...the 'meat and potatoes'. The forum turned out to be a nice addition to provide support and information for those who needed it. I upload large files between 40mb-2gb of music, templates, and presets for professional and aspiring multimedia producers/engineers.
My first option was to learn programming to build my own solution (which I haven't completely ruled out), but IPS was a great start which allowed me to focus on the content I provide for my users. This is an invaluable service.. Though its not perfect, it does better than any other boxed solution with a wide range of integrated apps and hooks.
I read many compaints about pricing, but I don't know a single programmer who has a better quote for such a range of functionality and requirements. Please continue to study the needs of your users. Maybe even start a VIP forum where paid users get their requests acknolwedged first.
I wish IPS team the best of success.
#2265668 Upgrading to 3.3.2 - Could not have had better help

This resulted in 7 support tickets which in turn resulted in a couple of problems solved by IPS, three resulting bug reports in the Tracker and the rest I could solve myself after getting the solution from IPS and/or being pointed.in the right direction.
So what I am saying is that after less than 24 hours I have been able to get not only quick but also very precise support which has made my board the way I want it to be. Many thanks for the great support and also the great product upgrades. Looking forward to what's coming next

Let's flip this thinking for a minute, and assume the white label app was released. So your users are locked to only use the white label app with your community, and now they must buy the generic mobile app to access the other ip board communities.
So many people who are discussing this topic are thinking only of point to point instead of point to node.
Imagine how angry your users will be when they discover they have to have TWO or SEVERAL apps to access the several ip board communities.
Invision Power is giving everyone choices and options. Their thinking is much more strategic than some of the accusations thrown up here.
#2265255 suggestion - ease of use on first look

first suggestions
1. on the first run its not very user friendly having blank text boxes and then having to type in urls
suggestion:
have a list of sites display that have been submitted by customers via this site - with a search if needed
am sure there used to be something like this before ?
2. no difference in the notification that the url is incorrect or if the site is not compatible
was a turn off spending a fair few minutes entering different combinations of the url - did it need the root, the forum url or was it just that the site wouldn't work with the app
suggestion
a simple "site not compatible" error message would lessen the frustration and increase the usability

There is a mobile skin that comes with the default product. Fact.
There are other mobile skins available from skinners for a price. Fact.
There are at least two "mobile apps" already in the marketplace that cost forum owners nothing but they do cost the users money. TapaTalk and ForumRunner. Fact.
Now there are three "mobile apps" in the marketplace that cost forum owners nothing but they do cost the users money. TapaTalk, ForumRunner, and IPS. Fact.
The cost for the IPS app is $1.99. The cost for the TapaTalk app is $4.99. The cost for the ForumRunner app is $0 (read only) or $1.99 (full version). Fact.
Mobile Skin <--> Mobile App: two different animals. What in the world is the issue? Would it make everyone feel better if IPS started a subsidiary, maybe called 'TalkWalk' that sold the mobile app? Then it is just another company selling a mobile app product in the marketplace ...
As for me, I am very excited that IPS has this product in house because I am hoping for the white label version where I might be able to offer the app to our premium, paid members for free. I can't do that with TapaTalk or ForumRunner. All I can do for those two mobile apps is buy the white label and give it to our members for free.
Estimated cost of white label product from IPS? Unknown. Fact. Suggested $1,000 price tag? Speculation by one person.
#2262339 IP Gallery - It's driven us away from IPS to the competition

But frustration in a product direction is no reason to imply IPS staff are anything less than truthful. They may often be unable to provide details (for very good reasons), and yes, they may sometimes have a design vision that doesn't match what everyone wants all the time. Frankly, it's impossible to accomplish that last.
The one thing that makes IPS different than most web software companies/organizations I've been involved with is that they DO listen. And I don't think I've ever seen anyone from the IPS staff lie to the community. Not answering is not lying. And having an honest difference of opinion about ideal functionality is NOT the same thing as misrepresenting.
Do I think that IP.G needs some MAJOR changes? You bet. Am I sure that the coming changes will fix IP.G for the way my community wants to use it? Nope. But I'm pretty sure the copious threads in this forum have been read and a list of issues compiled from them. The one thing I'm totally sure of is that if Charles says IP.G is the next one to get dev focus, than that's exactly what they are working on as we post on this very topic. Given some of the great changes that have come in the latest versions of IP.Board and IP.C, I have reasonable hope that the next generation IP.G will be a sizable improvement.
I look forward to seeing what's coming in the next version.

#2256956 Suggestion - Cache Query but not Block
Posted

For example, lets say you have some latest content feed blocks like latest posts, downloads, articles, comments, etc. You want these cached to reduce server load (my page loads start to lag having say 4 of these types of blocks on a page not cached).
The problem is, the block needs to be processed on a per member basis to set the correct timezone for the user.
So I think it would be great to have an option to cache the query used for the block, without having to cache the html output. That way you could set the cache query to say 5 mins, to reduce server load, and then just process the html template on demand using the cached query.

Typically you will receive a download link in reply to your request (and once payment was approved etc) with a message such as:
We received your payment. You can download the data (**.*MB) at http://s**.invisionfree.com/bk/************.sql
Download the data at the link provided, that's the InvisionFree part done with. Please note this does not work / apply if its a Zetaboard, as far as I'm aware they do not currently offer a downloadable database for that.
Now, as its (almost but not quite) a 1.3 database you will be provided with, it may fall into the category of an upgrade in which case a support / upgrade technician here could do it for you. A staff member will hopefully reply to clarify this point.
As an alternative, I do have a tool available here to assist if you wanted to do it yourself, it is quite straightforward.

So in all actuality, this is one of the most stable 'main' releases there has been. With .1 then .2 and maybe even a .3, the number of bugs should drop drastically. The reason I said "maybe" a .3 is that with as good as it appears to be (so few bugs), I wouldn't be surprised if 3.3.2 was the end of the line for the 3.3 series. The developers did an outstanding job and we should give credit to them for such an accomplishment.
if you still think 215 is a high number, then go check out one of the veryBad competitors. I've heard how their 4.x series had well over 1,000 bugs when it was first released (in final status) and that's with 4.x really being 3.x, just repackaged. They actually took a stable product and created a massive number of bugs into it, instead of a complete rewrite, which then would have made 1,000+ bugs a bit more understandable for a 'final' release.
