#2270981 All IPB forums breaching EU law

That entirely contradicts Matt's post though Charles and tbh shows that you probably haven't read the guidelines either.

Matt's post was made before we made in-depth research on this law, its implications, and the total lack of clarity throughout the EU on what it really entails.

I am afraid your simple link to a PDF does not really touch on the broader picture here

As I said, there are tools in the AdminCP for you to provide any sort of legal notices or disclaimers you may feel are needed for your locality.

#2270964 All IPB forums breaching EU law

Posted Charles on Yesterday, 09:03 AM

IPBs are not breaching EU law or any other law.

Software cannot violate a law: it is up to you to comply with your local laws. We provide a terms of service and privacy policy settings group in the AdminCP that you are free to edit to comply with anything you need to do.

IPS cannot and will not try to sort through all the myriad of laws around the world (especially one like this where no one is 100% clear on what to do or how it applies). It is nothing something we can do and, as I said, the requirement is on the site owner to ensure their entier site complies with any law or even business requirements they have.

This is why we provide policy pages you can easily edit in the AdminCP to include any notices or wording you, your attorney, or your company legal department advises are needed.

For the record I, as a customer with the same standing as the rest of you, don't think Charles said anything inappropriate and am actually quite impressed he's still taking time to respond to your stubborn concerns.

#2261499 A possible valedictory

Posted Michael on 01 May 2012 - 07:58 AM

I agree with this, the documentation here is the one aspect that still needs the most work to bring it up to snuff.  There may be a lot of good docs out there, but try finding them if you're not the one who wrote them.  There are 2 different Documentation links in the navigation dropdown; the new section only has 5 articles in it that I can see, and the old one seems to have had several attempts at organizing it, none of which have been successful.  It's got this 'New Docs (work in progress)' category in it, so a lot of stuff that would logically be in some other category may be there instead.  And then the developer category there has a '-TEMPORARY STORAGE-' category which has other docs in it which should logically go in another category too.  In addition, somewhere out there is doxygen-generated documentation too, but I don't think it's actually linked anywhere.

The only way I am ever able to find anything in the documentation now is to search for some key word in the code I know would be in a certain article.  Otherwise if I ever need to refer someone to documentation on how to do something I generally just try and explain it myself.  It's all well and good for those of us who have worked with the software for years and are comfortable getting our hands dirty digging through the code, but I'd hate to be a new modder trying to make sense of this documentation.

You really need to start by organizing everything.  Pick one place for it to go and put it there.  Lay it out logically so that brand new people can understand where to find the docs that talk about getting started with the software, and explaining how to use the tools out there to manage their site.  And then also organize the developer documentation so someone can look at what's there and actually create something.  I'll take the hooks documentation as an example, a lot of those docs talk only about the PHP file you have to create, and some don't even show any code in them.  A person should be able to open one of those docs and be able to create a hook from it, and I don't see a new person being able to do that today.

The truth is, our site will be biased towards IP.Board because virtually everyone here is a client or user of IP.Board.  If you would like an objective opinion, your best option is to pose the same question on a neutral third party site such as theadminzone.com, however if you truly want our opinion....IP.Board is your best bet. :D

#2101551 Questions about IP.Board 3.2.0: Search/VNC Interface Improvements

Posted Kyanar on 12 April 2011 - 11:35 PM

Crabpaws, it honestly sounds like no matter what they give you as a rationale for their decisions, you will simply argue that it's wrong because it does not comply with your view.  They tried tabs - that's what 3.1 uses now.  No one likes it, except maybe yourself.  You claimed that there was a cost to using filters that somehow would be of earth shattering significance.  Rikki gives examples of no less than 3 major sites that do it this way, and you reply by eliminating 2 of them, and claiming the third isn't usable and that you shouldn't copy them (actually, I would like to copy them thanks - they rake in millions upon millions a year, I only wish I could do that), and countering by giving them as a usability example a site so difficult to use, I had trouble working out where exactly you go to create a new post - as well as being so painfully ugly I wanted to tear my eyes out.  Thanks, but I would most emphatically NOT ever want IPS to copy Craigslist.

You claim that Google's option is inappropriate because of the type of content.  I say this is complete codswallop.  Google does search.  View New Content is also search.  The pages you are saying are nothing alike are, for all intents and purposes, the same page with the same purpose. Search. What you're saying is that Google doesn't know how to lay out a search results page.  In the words of a local brewing company, Yeah Right.  Filters in the side bar make sense.  They take up less room than the horizontal bar, they can be reached in one click, and thanks to Google, they're ubiquitous and intuitive.

#2101735 Regarding new registration interface

Posted Rikki on 13 April 2011 - 11:06 AM

Simplifying things helps everyone. We're not doing it to cater to stupid people. We're doing it to reduce confusion, reduce mistakes, and get more people to join your forums. Usability and simplicity help everyone regardless of ability.

There's a reason Facebook, Twitter, etc. have incredibly simple registration routines. It's proven to work.

It's all very well quoting your registration figures, but that doesn't take into account those users who might have given up and gone away, or not even bothered trying. Making it as simple as possible will help that.

And please - compromise account security? Does your email regularly get hacked because you use your email address to log in to gmail? If we relied on display names to prevent hacking, we'd be doing something very wrong.

#2092140 IP.Board 3.1.4 Compatibility Patch for Internet Explorer 9

Posted IPS News on 18 March 2011 - 09:31 AM

IP.Board 3.1.4 JavaScript Patch for Internet Explorer 9 Compatibility

With the recent release of Internet Explorer 9, JavaScript compatibility issues have been reported with IP.Board 3.1.  These issues stem from the fact that IP.Board utilizes Prototype, a popular JavaScript library, and the latest stable release of Prototype at the time of 3.1.4's release was version 1.6.  Prototype version 1.7 has since been released to include compatibility with Internet Explorer 9.

Today we are releasing a patch for IP.Board 3.1.4 that includes the updated Prototype library (version 1.7) so that our clients may update their communities immediately.  While IE9 is still new, adoption of the latest release of this popular browser is expected to grow quickly, and we want to ensure that our software works in as many commonly-used browsers as possible.

Updating your Community

As of the time of this announcement, the main IP.Board 3.1.4 download in your client area has been updated.  If you download 3.1.4 after this announcement, your download will include the patch.  You may optionally download the full 3.1.4 release and upload it to your community to ensure it is fully up to date at any time.

To patch your community manually, follow these simple steps:

  • Download the patch zip file attached to this announcement
  • Extract the zip file locally on your computer
  • Upload the contents of this zip file to your server, preserving directory structure (the /public folder should overwrite the /public folder on your server where IP.Board is located)

If you require assistance or have any questions, please feel free to submit a ticket.

  • Be aware that as this patch only involves updating a single JavaScript file, you and your users may need to clear your browser cache for the changes to take effect.
  • We believe this patch will work on any versions of IP.Board 3.1.x but has only been tested on version 3.1.4.

#2087990 Big fat Manage Topic Poll button -- wha?

Posted Kyanar on 08 March 2011 - 01:15 AM

View Postcrabpaws, on 07 March 2011 - 12:56 PM, said:

Thanks, Pfeiffer.

A fundamental usability principle is to optimize the interface design for the largest number of users. I guess I'll keep repeating this until I give up on IPB.

If Invision surveyed every installation of IPB that ever was, I would be surprised if even 5% of the topics contained a poll. There is no reason why that big fat Manage Topic Poll button is taking up prime real estate in the start topic task, interrupting the user's concentration and intention.

My solution is going to be to turn off the polls altogether, they're going to be used so rarely -- that's how important it is for me to offer my users an easy way to do extremely common tasks.

An IPB developer can spend 40 minutes making this correction in 3.2, or IPB can force each customer to spend time on work-arounds.

You know, I would agree with you on making it a bit more streamlined if you weren't so damn condescending.  Seriously, every post from you smacks of "I know better than you, you should do as I tell you".  Haven't you ever heard the saying "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar"?  Have you ever stopped to re-read a post you make and said to yourself "oh, I should rephrase that, because it makes me sound like a pompous conceited self-righteous git"?  You make good suggestions, then throw all that effort down the toilet by prefixing it with "A fundamental usability principle is..." or "This is usability 101..." or "I've been a usability designer since 1999 and..." - seriously.  Even your subject line is patronising!  Here's how I'd suggest rewording your post:

Quote

The new topic page has a rather large "Manage Topic Poll" button, which I think is a bit big considering how often it is used.  Can it be moved to a more out of the way spot, perhaps to the area below the post box, where it's less in the way?

#2007096 IPS hosting

I'm looking to switch hosts off hostgator. I'll probably end up restarting my community since it isn't too big anyway (only 400 posts)  my question is, how is the hosting at IPS? I guess this is more towards users who use it for their hosting...I have my domain name and all....but i'm curious :)

I have been with them for about a year for a few forums and I never had to open a ticket for hosting.

I have been through maybe 40-50 hosting companies, VPS servers and dedicated servers for various sites.

IPS is A+++ for hosting.  :)

#1998717 Enhancements to IPS Support and Services

Posted IPS News on 02 August 2010 - 07:20 AM

In our continuing efforts to enhance the support services offered by IPS we recently made several changes that should help you to enjoy your IPS-powered community even more.

Easier Documentation Search

In response to customer feedback we have enhanced our documentation search system to search our official documentation, community-submitted articles, and resource downloads all at once.

Read the full information on search changes...

This change should allow you to more easily search all the various resources available to you as an IPS Community Suite user.

Try new documentation search now...

Reorganization of Documentation

We have a lot of great information in our documentation but it is often difficult to find as it is spread out into so many articles. As an example, Sphinx search setup alone has three separate articles explaining search settings, setting up Sphinx, and troubleshooting Sphinx. Using this example, we are working on merging all these various articles into one "everything you need to know about Sphinx" article and will be doing this with other articles as well. Another example may be the System Settings overview: rather than 10 mini-articles on settings you will now have one, comprehensive article to read.

This change does mean we will have to eliminate the current IP.Board option of the in-line AdminCP article view but we believe eliminating that one option in return for overall more comprehensive and easier to read documentation is one that will benefit everyone.

These changes will take place over the next several weeks as we merge things and add in more documentation content.

Official Support on Company Community

For years IPS has only offered official support through our support ticket system but today that finally changes. We are renaming the Peer-to-Peer Technical Support forums and will begin having IPS Staff monitor those forums and provide official support responses right here on the IPS Company Community.

Having forum support will be a great benefit to all IPS Community Suite users as it allows everyone to engage each other to help in a group effort. We have an amazing customer-community here at IPS and between customers helping each other and the addition of IPS Staff assisting in forum questions we believe that the overall support experience will greatly improve for all.

Guaranteed support will still only be offered in tickets and we may still ask you to submit a ticket if, for example, we need to login to your community to diagnose a problem. Forum support will be available to anyone with an active support service for IP.Board or the applications.

Community Hosting Improvements

We are making several large changes to our community hosting services which will benefit all new and existing customers of IPS community hosting.

  • All new account orders will have the IPS Community Suite software included in the packages automatically installed.
  • We are introducing a new Starter plan at just $4.99 per month for those just getting started in online communities.
  • The current $5 per month add-on package that includes IP.Content and incoming email will be changed to offer both IP.Content and IP.Nexus (when it is released) and will be available on all packages excluding the Starter plan.
  • Incoming email will now be a feature of all packages.

These changes will be applied to all existing customers on the package types listed on our web site and all new orders as well. If you are on an older package that is no longer offered on our web site your services will remain unchanged.

We are also discontinuing traditional web site hosting so that we may better focus on our core expertise of community services. If you are currently on a traditional web site hosting package your service will remain unchanged.

All of these changes will be phased in over the next few weeks.

Everyone at IPS hopes you enjoy these new changes and enhancements to our support and services!
