#2162944 IP.Board 3.2.2 and Apps Released

Posted IPS News on 31 August 2011 - 08:04 AM

Invision Power Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of IP.Board 3.2.2, IP.Chat 1.3.1, IP.Gallery 4.1.1, IP.Blog 2.4.1, and IP.Downloads 2.4.1!

These releases are maintenance releases after our highly anticipated release of IP.Board 3.2 and its related applications. These releases fix many reported issues.

We are releasing the following new software:

IP.Board 3.2.2

Fully featured community platform including forums, members profiles, calendar, status system, integration, and much, much more.

IP.Gallery 4.1.1

Categories and photo albums for your members to share their images and videos on your community.

IP.Blog 2.4.1

Allow you and your members to post blogs on your community or syndicate externally hosted blogs easily.

IP.Downloads 2.4.1

Complete file management application including file version control, commenting, and forum topic linking.

IP.Chat 1.3.1
Engage your members in real time chat or send them private chats while in the chat room.

Also, IP.SEO 1.5.0 is available in the IPS Marketplace.

Release Notes
  • If you are upgrading a community with a large number of posts from version 3.1.4 or earlier you may wish to have your web host execute the post table alter query on your behalf. Large post tables may time out running this query in the browser. The upgrade system will warn you if this is needed. As a benchmark, our install of 865,000+ posts took a bit less than 3 minutes to run this query.
  • If you are upgrading from version 3.1.4 or earlier, your skin will of course need to be redone after you upgrade to 3.2.
  • The visual skin editor in 3.2 should still be considered a beta feature. It will be improved with each maintenance update.
  • Each of the applications specified above is only compatible with IP.Board 3.2 and not older versions (for example, IP.Nexus 1.3 cannot be installed on IP.Board 3.1.x).
  • We may reply to this topic with hot-fix patches or notes if any critical issues come up so please use the "Follow this Topic" feature to get notified.
  • If you experience any problems, before submitting a ticket, please disable all third party applications and hooks.
  • Please remember that IP.Calendar and IP.Chat are separate downloads in your client area.  You will need to download and upgrade these separate applications (in addition to IP.Board itself) if you wish to continue using them with IP.Board 3.2.

Please read our 3.2.0 announcement for a full list of what's new in the 3.2 series!

#1849101 OpenID Security Update for IP.Board 3.0.2

Posted IPS News on 26 August 2009 - 10:07 AM

OpenID Security Update for IP.Board 3.0.2

We are investigating issues related to OpenID not completely authenticating data which can result in the security of your community being compromised. This issue can only impact your community if you have enabled OpenID logins as the OpenID is disabled when IPS ships IP.Board releases.

Protecting Your IP.Board

There are two methods to protect your community.

Method 1: Disable OpenID

The easiest fix is to simply disable OpenID logins. These login systems are disabled by default in IP.Board so unless you have specifically turned on OpenID you are already protected. This screen shot shows you what to look for in your AdminCP:

  • Click "Log In Management" in the AdminCP
  • Look for OpenID in the list. If there is already a red "X" then OpenID is disabled and your community is safe from this issue.
  • If you see a green check: disable OpenID by clicking the drop-down menu to the right, edit details, and set "Log In Enabled" to "No"

If OpenID is disabled and you do not use/need this login method you do not need to do anything further.

Method 2: Upload Source File

If OpenID is in use in your community and you need to keep it enabled simply upload the attached file to your forums directory. The path is included in the zip file and it is just one file.

Attached File  260809.zip   5.17K   5430 downloads

Support services note: as this update is a single-file update or the issue can be eliminated by simply disabling OpenID in the AdminCP we do request that clients apply either the setting or file fix themselves if possible. The 3.0.2 download has been updated as of the time of this announcement.

#1847841 Best SEO?

I'm sure other members will chime in with their thoughts or already have (bear in mind replies here in pre-sales are mod queued, so people may actually be responding but just waiting to be approved), but I would have to say that for the purposes of SEO, the in-built feature likely isn't what you want.  It's basic, and IPS themselves say that they don't have dedicated SEO experts on staff, so they are limited in what they can do in that respect.  I have heard that CommunitySEO is quite good, though more expensive than IPBoard itself (you might find that to be a turnoff - I know I do).  Minerva gets mixed reviews.

With IP.Board v3 I think its already built-in so that might be good enough for you.

Right now Community SEO is the best.
With time the built in system may mature and allow us to manually adjust how the urls look.  Right now you have to go in and actually rewrite parts of code in a PHP file.  If IPB wants to give us SEO urls then give us an option in the admin panel to change how they are written/appear.

Until that time comes I will have to stay with Community SEO. For I find the built in system to be lacking in features (from the admin panel)
