#2402594 IPS4: Better Template Editing

Posted by Tom Christian on 13 May 2013 - 09:16 AM

You can already do that with WebDAV template editing.

I've already discussed with Mark about the time it takes to save files using WebDAV making it unusable. It's quicker to save templates in the ACP.

#2316396 I Would Like to See Better Profiles

Posted by Tom Christian on 04 October 2012 - 09:57 AM

What specific changes would you like to see to the member list  While I do agree profiles have lots of room for improvement i'm a little bit curious as to what you would like to see the member list offer that it doesn't already offer. I agree it is rather cumbersome to just a list of thousands of users but how do you propose we improve that?

One thing I've never understood is why the 'member list' is considered an important enough area of a forum to be placed second in the navigation. Why is it even in the navigation?

I don't think I've ever actually used the member list on a forum. If I want to find a specific user, I'll use the search feature. Unless I'm missing some amazing feature within the member list, It just seems like an utterly pointless feature to me.

#2308835 Responsive design changes planned for v3.5?

Posted by Tom Christian on 14 September 2012 - 06:31 PM

I'm a big fan of responsive web design as well. I actually spent 15-20 minutes a couple of weeks back playing with the board index to see if I could make it responsive.

(the navigation drops out when clicked)

With only a couple of lines of CSS & JS I managed that. Obviously, it's only scratching the surface. Creating a responsive theme that covers the entire platform would be a huge task.

+1 from me too. I already suggested this in the IPS Marketplace improvements topic a few weeks back :).

#2264872 Notify admins if skin update is available

Posted by Tom Christian on 08 May 2012 - 05:16 PM

I know this is available to mod authors so that administrators can be informed if an update is available. Why not skinners?

I regularly have people e-mail me and tell me my products are 'bugged' or 'flawed' yet in reality, it's because they've upgraded from 3.2 -> 3.3 without downloading the latest version of the skin.

This would be an extremely useful addition in my opinion.

Thanks.

#2254386 Restore the ability to change skin via URL

Posted by Tom Christian on 14 April 2012 - 07:30 AM

That might explain the problems I had then, as its not something I'd use usually. I'd have to suggest a bug report as either it should be removed from the .zip or ideally updated so it works. Then again, we have this feedback topic...

I'll add this to the tracker then :)

#2254383 Restore the ability to change skin via URL

Posted by Tom Christian on 14 April 2012 - 07:24 AM

There's a skinchange.php in the tools folder. That would be my initial suggestion for the moment.

I'll admit when I tried it a while back I could not get it to work exactly as I expected but put that down to other factors rather than the tool itself.

I've tried it already and couldn't get it to work.

Michael also told me that this tool probably won't work anymore due to the change in the way the skin chooser works in 3.3. If that's the case, I don't know why it's still there >_<

#2254081 Restore the ability to change skin via URL

Posted by Tom Christian on 13 April 2012 - 02:07 PM

I'd like to request to have this functionality added back to IPB.

I used this (and many other skin authors) for the "Demo" option in the IPS Marketplace in order to link potential customers to specific skins on a demo forum. Now, they're simply presented with the incorrect skin when following the demo link.

Thanks,
Tom.

#2170825 30$ skins in marketplace

Posted by Tom Christian on 15 September 2011 - 06:16 AM

Well, taking into consideration the quality of those skins and the amount of work it takes to complete such a skin, $30 is infact pretty cheap.

#2161934 Next time...

Posted by Tom Christian on 29 August 2011 - 10:06 AM

This is precisely why you're allowed a test board - to see whether the software is suitable for you.

Frankly, it's your fault if you installed it without (1) testing the software yourself and (2) being 100% happy with what the software does.

Totally agree.

Even more so if the "features are vital for their community." as how the OP originally put it.

Yeah it's been on and off all day for me as well.

#2122610 3.2 Square Edges.....

Posted by Tom Christian on 13 June 2011 - 08:19 PM

Arguing that rounded corners slow down a website or crash a browser in this day and age is absolute nonsense.

This is purely a cosmetic issue, and personally, the squared navigation tabs fit very nicely with this skin.

#2068567 Version 3.2 - Template revamp/modernization

Posted by Tom Christian on 16 January 2011 - 08:34 AM

Well,  we don't know how long it will take for HTML5 to become the real  standard of web. IE7 and 8 don't support it, but many admins of  different forums/projects say that IE7 and 8 are really important for  them.

There are ways of making HTML5 work in IE8.

Something I've used in previous projects: http://www.modernizr.com/

I do like your ideas. However, I highly doubt such drastic changes would be made for 3.2.

These sort of changes would most likely come in the next major release (4.0 I guess)

#2062628 My thoughts on the Skinning System

Posted by Tom Christian on 02 January 2011 - 07:28 PM

I agree that 3.1 is hard to skin specially comparing it to 2.3 which was much easier to skin.
I made a few skins for 2.3 but have not even come close to deciphering 3.1 to be able to make skins.

I have to disagree with you there.

3.1 is a hell of a lot easier than 2.3.

Do you not remember having to edit EVERY single image for new topic / reply etc?

#1914125 For Rikki... Skinning Suggestions

Ahhh good old .borderwrap.. how we miss theeee

Yes! Definitely this as well! The only workaround I know at the moment leaves an annoyingly, LARGER gap but only in IE :/
