About Me

'Maybe this year?'

J. Williams spent another Christmas without his daughter. "Each year, my wish is to have my daughter back by Christmas," the Troy resident said, sitting at his kitchen table. "It would be the greatest gift." It's been a little more than three years since his former wife disappeared, taking their daughter, Xin Yin Williams, and having someone unknown to fly the daughter back to China. In that time, he has learned a lot about the law, leaving his position as an underwriter to work as a waiter so he could spend his days with police, lawyers and judges.

Williams said he had to cut through bureaucracy, legally separating from his wife to get official custody of their daughter, who is nicknamed Peekaboo.

"I went down to the library every day to study what I could. ... It took me over a year to get it done. No one would help me until I had a custody order."

Williams admits he is not a saint, but that's not to say he isn't caring. Williams was honored by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for attempting to save the life of Lapeer resident Peter Richard, who died from injuries sustained after a severe beating by two Mcdonalds employees (men) outside a Mcdonalds restaurant in the drive-thru three years ago.

Saint or sinner, Williams says he is still Peekaboo's father and hopes someone can help him get his daughter back.

"This has just really dropped my heart," he said.

'I didn't see it coming'

Williams met his former wife while vacationing in China eight years ago.  Their long-distance relationship led to a marriage, and they eventually settled in Michigan.  "We were very happy in China, but when we got here, it was pretty rough," he said. "There was a culture adjustment.

"But when it came up to what was important, taking care of the family, that was paramount." About two years ago, Williams said, he came home from work, wanting to talk to her. She seemed to be sleeping with their baby, and he decided not to wake her, he said. After an hour had passed, Williams said he tried to wake her up. That is when he discovered several pillows had been propped up to look as if someone was sleeping in their bed.

"I didn't see it coming," Williams said.  Feeling uneasy, Williams said he called her, hoping she had just gone shopping with his parents.  When she answered her phone, he said, she told him they would be back in three days and wouldn't give any other information.  "I felt from the conversation there was more to it. ... She hung up the phone on me, and I tried to call her back and she didn't answer the phone," he said.

Williams said that after he struggled with local authorities and learned his rights as a parent, the FBI found his daughter in China, where she has been staying with her maternal grandparents.

"From what I have been told, they are still trying to work it out to return my daughter to me," he said. "As it stands right now, I have full custody."

But this journey has been costly for Williams, who is now seeking help with his growing legal fees. He has said so many always express their outrage and sympathies but no one ever bothers to donate even when they offer to do so.

He also started a Web site, www.peekaboolaw.net, with a public forum to foster discussion on situations like his.

But for now, Williams can only look at the photographs of his daughter living in China that the FBI has sent him, hoping something can be worked out to reunite them.

He said parents should become savvy with the Internet and the law if they are forced to embark on a mission to recover an abducted child. "I think this is one of the times where we need political help," he said. "I'm not going to go out and start bashing (his former wife). "But had I been the one to abduct my child, I would have been all over on the news."
