#2086569 IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Released

Posted IPS News on 04 March 2011 - 03:59 AM

Invision Power Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of IP.Gallery 4.0.0!

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 is the latest version of our popular Gallery application. It has been completely rewritten to modernize the interface and to add better functionality. Everyone here at IPS is very excited at this new release and hope our customers will enjoy the update to this popular application.

Over the course of development, we've kept a blog on its development and we invite you to review the entries:

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Manifesto
IP.Gallery 4.0 is a huge upgrade; the single biggest upgrade it has ever seen. We're blasting out the cobwebs and introducing a slick new interface that never loses sight of what a Gallery should be. We're simplifying permissions and accessibility to remove the clutter and confusion. We want you to fall in love with Gallery again.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Structural Changes
I want to completely re-focus Gallery and make the media the center of the application. I want users to view the images without being so concerned as to where they belong. I want to focus on organic discovery over being forced to browse pages of user albums or pages of categories.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 View Image Page Tour
I have taken a short video to explain some of the larger changes and features of this page for Gallery 4.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Uploading Tour
Arguably the most crucial part of the gallery system is the upload system. A cumbersome and slow upload system deters people from uploading new images.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Interface Tour
I wanted to take a moment to run through the interface and explain a little more about the album types we have in IP.Gallery now.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Media Uploading Tour
You can upload videos alongside normal photos and quickly add a thumbnail to the video. If you upload a m4v, certain mov files and flv files, these are played in a Flash video player much like YouTube.

IP.Gallery 4.0.0 Mobile Skin
The mobile theme is lightweight as expected and makes good use of the small cropped thumbs as well as the new 'small' image that is created. This saves a lot of bandwidth which will be a huge relief to those that don't have a good 3G signal.

Release Notes

  • If you are using IP.Content blocks that use Gallery data, please wait until IP.Gallery 4.0.1 for the updated IP.Content integration

  • We have had several beta releases for testing and are confident any major issues have been addressed. However, as this is the first supported release that will be used by thousands of people, there could be as yet undiscovered issues. Please report issues in the bug tracker.

  • Important technical support note: During the launch of a new products, and the great interest created, support response times (especially for install or upgrade requests) may be delayed. We appreciate your understanding during the launch time. If your community is critical in nature and even the slightest delay in support services would impact you then you may wish to wait until a future version to use IP.Gallery.

  • IP.Gallery requires IP.Board 3.1.4 and will not install on prior versions.

  • MSSQL driver files are still in development and not available with IP.Gallery 4.0.0

  • If your server uses ImageMagick (rather than GD) for image manipulation please wait for IP.Gallery 4.0.1.

Upgrading
IP.Gallery 4.0.0 has a built in upgrade system to upgrade your current IP.Gallery. However, please understand that this is a very large update and the interface has changed completely. We strongly recommend that you read the blog entries or test the Gallery installation on this site to ensure that all the functionality you need is available and the new interface suits your needs. If you have a gallery-centric site you may wish to wait for a future version. Please use the feedback forum for any discussion on the new functionality.

Version 4.0.1 Coming Soon

IPS is dedicated to promptly fixing any reported issues and will do so with the release of IP.Gallery version 4.0.1 very soon.

As mentioned in the release notes: because this is the first widely-distributed release there will be as yet undiscovered issues. You can expect several maintenance releases over the next several weeks. We appreciate your understanding and hope you can assist us in identifying any problems in this first supported release so we can quickly remedy them in our next updates.

I'll have to try that excuse on my next tax return - "Not a real business".

You're just like the media, taking things way out of context. He was saying that selling items on a forum isn't a real business and in a real money making adventure. Not a physical business.

(As for the Nexus, i read about it, and i didnt notice the "advertising, hosting management and support desk stuff", thought it was ONLY eCommerce!

I'm sorry for that.. Just thought it was ALOT to pay for a "ecommerce" system :P

Ofc, if you must spend $75 on a perfect "buy" system, pay it, but for peoples who dont have so much,
and maybe wanna sell somethin, or just have subscriptions by IP.subscriptions witch wont be supported by IPS after 3.2, and therefor wont be awesome..and that part makes me sad :(

But, its whats ever for me, i use paypal as subscription....but, its so unprofessional! Well, im not saying they have to, its a suggestion, and they maybe earn more :)

I agree that it's too much for what it is.... and yes you can get many free carts that are open source for free... they also have hundreds of features that ipn doesn't. People selling things on a forum based software are not getting rich, if it was a real business and money maker they would need a full on cart system.

This is an add on application it should be priced as such. Nickel and dime us to death on each add on and the price looks pretty bad once you add them all up.

#1907879 Considering trying out IPB3

I currently own several licenses of vBulletin with a sum of about 35-40k members. For several reasons I'm considering trying out other forum software on my smallest forum of about 4,000 members, but before I go with another paid solution I'd like to try to get some questions answered.

  • SEO is important to me, and even this small forum has a number of results on Google, Bing and Yahoo. If I convert to IPB from vB, does IPB have something (be it a script, .htaccess, etc) that will redirect the old forum links to the new IPB links?
  • vB offers users to install Products and Plugins. In my current setup I have a custom script (php randomizer basically) in the plugins of vB. Does IPB offer users to create their own "plug-ins" within the admin panel which can be used through out the forum?
  • Speaking of plug-ins and products, vB has a sister site vBulletin.org just for these. Does IPB have a similar site where other developers can share add-ons, if so what is the URL?
  • I'm interested in seeing how IPB performs on the server vs vB - does anyone know of any sites that's benchmarked the two forum softwares?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I dig deeper but right now #1 is my most important question. Losing all of my SEO results would be really hard to give up.

Thanks in advance!

1. Yes, the converter will redirect old links. http://community.inv...ers-handy-faqs/
2. We have hooks, apps, and modules. Im sure you will be able to convert yours.
3. Yep. http://community.inv...ower.com/files/
4. There are quite a few large boards running IPB, but I am not aware of any benchmarks. http://community.inv...ers-handy-faqs/

#2077826 IP.Board 3.0.x / 3.1.x Security Update and Mobile API Update

Posted IPS News on 08 February 2011 - 04:39 AM

A minor security issue has been discovered within the forum password system that could allow exposure of topic titles in password-protected forums. This issue does not allow the topics to be viewed and only affects forums that are password protected.

We have released a simple patch for this issue. To apply, simply download the correct zip file and upload the file(s) over the ones on your server. There is no need to rebuild or reset any templates or language packs. Customers with active support are welcome to ask technical support for assistance if required.

IP.Board 3.0.x
Attached File  patch-feb-3.0.zip   10.87K   537 downloads

IP.Board 3.1.4
Attached File  patch-feb-3.1.zip   17.9K   1404 downloads

In addition to the security patch described above, the IP.Board 3.1.4 patch also includes an update to our mobile API designed to resolve some issues, provide better integration for our iPhone application and to provide IP.Gallery 4.0 support alongside IP.Gallery 3.2.x.

The main download zips have been updated at the time of this post so if you have downloaded after the date of this message you do not need to apply this patch.

#2055301 IP.Board 3.0.x and Applications: End of Life Announcement

Posted IPS News on 13 December 2010 - 10:47 AM

IP.Board 3.0.x and Applications: End of Life Announcement

So that we can focus all of our development, support, and service efforts on the newest version 3.1 platform and create a great version 3.2, we are announcing the end of support (sometimes called end of life or EOL) for the following IPS software versions (and earlier versions):

  • IP.Board 3.0.x
  • IP.Blog 2.1.x
  • IP.Gallery 3.1.x
  • IP.Downloads 2.1.x
  • IP.Content 1.2.x
  • IP.Chat 1.0.x

Technical support, installations, and services will end for these products on June 1, 2011. On that date all technical or service requests will be advised to simply upgrade to the most recent versions of the products. We will not force upgrades but will also not be able to diagnose issues or answer questions relating to the older software. Also, on that date, IPS will no longer address any new issues or bugs reported in the older software versions.

You are of course free to continue using these older versions if you wish but IPS will no longer provide assistance after the EOL date.

Security Updates

In the event an issue is discovered impacting the security of these older versions of the software, IPS will provide a patch posted in our announcements forum. We will continue to provide security updates for several months after the EOL date based on severity of the issue.

Internet Explorer 7 Support

The next version of Internet Explorer, version 9, will soon be reaching a final, supported release from Microsoft. Once Internet Explorer 9 final is released we will begin phasing out support for Internet Explorer 7 which will then be two versions behind. This will not be an abrupt end of support but we will base our phase-out of support based on the market share and adoption rate of IE8/9 versus IE7. Issues reported that are specific to IE7 will be evaluated on a case by case basis and, depending on the severity of their impact, we will still address them. However, as a general practice, cosmetic issues or minor lack of functionality specific to IE7 will not be addressed.

#1977501 Integration with IP.Gallery

Posted Wolfie on 25 June 2010 - 08:54 AM

If I upload something that I could have uploaded to the gallery, a handy feature would be to 'link it' with the gallery.

For example, let's say that I upload a video (of a known type), then I could click on an option to make it available for viewing in a gallery of my choice that I have permission to post in.  Then on the IPG side, someone could watch it and if they want, they could click a link and be taken to IPD to download the video.

Would also be nice if uploading a video to IPG would give me the option to make it available for downloading in IPD.

I love the Gallery, however sadly the whole concept of the Forums are now slowly dying away, because of Twitter and  Facebook and even Bebo.

I have just renewed my Board Licence for this year, but if the trend continues then I see no point in paying out for something that is now rarely used.  Since these sites started up there  has been a great influx over to  these websites resulting in a hell of a lot of boards disappearing.

I used to get 150 visits per day, very small compared to some of your boards, but mine is not open to the public, being a Military Board however now is an average of 34 per day, where have they gone - Facebook

Your reply is truly flawed here.  I have boards that have not seen any change from the inception of myspace or facebook.  People still want there niche community and facebook and myspace just do not provide this.  Groups on myspace and facebook are no where near the control you get and community integration of a forum.  If I had to pick the only thing that is lacking within most forums is the integration with the myspace, facebook, last.fm, etc.  This would be my only gripe.  If you could bring in those aspects then it would be much easier to coexist.  If anything facebook, myspace has brought more traffic to my boards as more and more users become "social aware/educated".

#2008583 Suggestion: Contacting Author

Posted chabbs.c on 19 August 2010 - 09:24 AM

I use IP Content as an article directory. You can see it here http://published.massivelinks.com/ . I have strict guidelines for submission and many times I don't approve articles that have been submitted. I also approve many articles. Currently there is no way to let the author know if an article has been approved or not. Here's what I would like to see added as a feature in IP Content.

- An approve and disapprove message that can be edited.
- Have the messages as being optional. For example: only send out message for approved articles, only send out message for disapproved articles, send message for both approved and disapproved articles.
- Showing the author in a column within the "Manage Articles" section.
- The ability to click on the author's name for private messaging from within the edit page of the article and from the Manage Articles page.

#2009544 Why IPC is failing

Posted Miss Moiraine on 21 August 2010 - 09:45 AM

There is definitely a hump with coming to grips with IP.Content. Converting my site over wasn't too hard, but then everything had been done by hand before which isn't really the norm in this day and age. If I hadn't already had the majority of HTML/CSS written I'm not sure how frustrating it would have been. However, when it came time to call a poll script it just flat out wasn't working. And post after post would say IP.Content handles PHP just fine, handles it normally etc, but that really isn't the case and if you dig deep enough you find posts saying essentially that some scripts might conflict.

In my case it was a simple function for a per-existing poll script. Not even the developer could figure out why it flat out wouldn't work. This isn't some real piece of complicated code either:
<?php  require_once('poll.php');
display_poll();  ?>
(and yes I know about taking out the <?php ?> stuff :P)
Having him rewrite things just so it could work with IP.Content wasn't an option so we eventually settled on just using an iframe which is far from ideal.

I probably would have ran into the same issue with Wordpress or Joomla, but there is so much documentation and help files and help communities that finding a solution would have been easy-peasy. However, I went with IP.Content in the first place because it is suppose to be able to handle the same stuff a handwritten HTML page can, so imagine my surprise to find there are exceptions. That, and I don't need all that extra crap that comes with most CMS solutions. :\

So while I don't want the flexibility and power hindered, something needs to be done; I might not be drowning but all I'm managing to do is tread water. But I know that's a tall order.  :P
