#1927060 Server Loads on IPB 3.x versus 2.3.x

Posted 3DKiwi on 16 March 2010 - 06:33 PM

A few of us on medium to large sites experienced similar things. Things that you can do:

1. Upgrade server memory. 2.3.6 ran fine on my dedicated server with 1gb of memory. with version 3 I was getting frequent crashes. The cure was to upgrade to 2gb of memory. I have not had a crash since.

2. Add a delay to robots.txt to slow down search engines. Seems search engines go bananas indexing your forum pages with version 3. I added a 10 second delay to mine. e.g. here on line 2:

User-agent: *
Crawl-Delay: 10
Disallow: /ipb/admin/
Disallow: /ipb/cache/

3. Slow down Google indexing site. Done in your Google Webmaster account. if you don't have one then you will need to create one.

4. Make sure you running the latest version of IPB i.e. 3.0.5

Hope this helps.

#1824308 Manage ACP Restrictions

Posted Discorev on 11 July 2009 - 05:19 AM

Once an administrator account has been created or even when it is being created if you wish to manage their restrictions you are given all admin options with blank checkboxes...

when creating the account wouldn't be better to have them all checked so you may uncheck those you do not wish them to have... and then also suppy uncheck / check all options?

I'm sure there are others who'll agree with me on this one... and perhaps those who don't but its my feedback so :P

#1918681 Template <if> expressions

Posted Kyanar on 27 February 2010 - 03:46 PM

It'd be awesome if we could use <else if> as well, so if we have multiple tests to run we don't have to enclose them in giant nested <if> statements.

Is this doable?

#1919629 Improving the custom profile fields

Posted Wolfie on 01 March 2010 - 07:16 PM

There's already a field for HTML code to include a profile field in the topic view.

Be nice to have an HTML section for how to format the data in the members profile view.  If empty, it would just display the information 'as-is'.

This could then be used to easily add in support for additional services (either IM or websites) without having to edit the template bits.

Currently, there are a bunch of if/else/if/etc nestings to check for AIM, ICQ, etc.  But if it's for a service not pre-supported, then unless the admin modifies the bit, it will just show the data as it was entered.

With the ability to modify HTML code per field, a new service could be added easily.  Also, would allow the admin to alter how it appears (big, small, underlined, bolded, pryotechnic, etc).

Either that (which I would imagine wouldn't be too terribly hard to implement) or another idea, where pre-supported services could be managed, then if a field is made that uses one of those pre-supported services, it could use the HTML code from that.  It would make it easy for new services/sites to be added.

Main goal overall is to make it possible for services/sites to be properly linked, but without having to modify skins in order to do it.  If someone has 10 skins on their board, the that's 10 that they have to modify currently to add support for just one profile field (if it needs a certain format or something).

#1900173 Well, am I beating a dead horse?

What do you mean by "this thread really isn't going anywhere".
This is IPB feedback forum and very right place to talk to IPS people about what we like, or what we don't like.

The search uses MySQL.  If you have problems with search, go complain to the people at MySQL about it.  IPS uses out of the box code to achieve everything.

Thats a ridiculous answer. Vbulletin also uses Mysql but is able to come up with reasonable results. IPS has even conceded that the results are less than satisfactory and has stated they are making improvements. If you would like to know more specifics of what is terrible about the current search system, read the numerous complaint threads about it by myself and others. You could try searching for those threads

Look, we're not talking here about brain surgery.
This is not early '90s, when to find something, you had know, what word goes first, where to put quote, where to put plus, or minus sign.
This is 2010 and all reputable search engine employ plain text search.
If Google can find exact match going through billions of pages, how come IPB search is not able to find any match searching through hundreds of pages?
My search string contained FOUR exact words out of SIX words from topic title and still....no match.
It's simply a failure, whatever you want to say.

Just a simple example.
I search for:
how to install Sphinx

This is what I get:

Garbage, isn't it?

Surely, very exact topic,

How to install Sphinx with IPB
is right here: http://community.inv...phinx-with-ipb/

Surely, IF I knew exact topic name and IF I searched for "how to install sphinx" (with quotes), here you're:

Posted Image
but this is not what the search is for.

If I use Google and I search for ipb 3 sphinx search (no quotes, or "pluses"), all relevant hits are there.
So, why IPB search can't find it?

I'm sorry, but I pay for IPB product.
If I bought a new car and a horn doesn't work, are you going to send me to horn manufacturer?

I've read on this very forum from people, who switched to Sphinx and it's not much better.

#1920233 Suggestion: Status Profile Links

Posted Andy Rixon on 03 March 2010 - 08:01 AM

Just how Twitter works, when someone uses @UsersName it gets linked to the @UsersName profile.

The same could apply to the status updates, as I have seen many people (on different sites) use @UsersName to basically reply to a members status.

#1906537 3.1 request. "Favorite Posts"

However, I don't think that favorite posts and favorite threads should be on the same system. It'll just be messy then.
It's better, in my opinion, to have this favorite posts and being able to favorite a post, have a special page for favorite posts(along with categories) on your profile. Then have a seperate system for the bookmarking of threads. Read this: http://community.inv...96-collections/
Be easier to just have it bookmark posts.  If you want to bookmark a thread, you just bookmark the first post of that thread.  First post of the thread is basically the thread itself (in a manner of speaking).

Posted Wolfie on 12 July 2009 - 01:25 AM

Sort of like you can friend someone or watch a topic, click on a post to mark it as a favorite.  Then when you want to recall a post for some reason, you can look through your favorites.  Mark it for any reason, helpful information, funny joke, interesting topic, etc.

#1886299 Invision Power Board 3.0.5 Released

Posted IPS News on 08 December 2009 - 04:59 PM

We are pleased to announce Invision Power Board 3.0.5 has been released.

This is a maintenance release for IP.Board 3 and addresses various bugs, security enhancements, and performance improvements.

Major Changes Since 3.0.4

Among many dozens of smaller bugs fixed and performance improvements, the following security enhancements were made:

  • SQL and local file include issue fixed. Note: Due to protection within the SQL driver classes, it is very difficult to effectively exploit IP.Board using this attack. Also you need moderator permissions to perform any exploit. We've hardened this code regardless. Also, due to the input cleaning functions IP.Board uses, the local file include is limited to PHP files on the file system as the usual 'null byte' trick is ineffective.
  • Internet Explorer XSS Issue due to incorrect attachment handling fixed.

Downloading

You can download IP.Board 3.0.5 and any applications you have an active license for in the client area. As always, make a backup of your community before proceeding.

#1885906 IPB 3.1.0 features

Posted Gabriel Petrelli on 07 December 2009 - 04:25 PM

It would be nice to set a ban reason which is displayed to the user when they try to access the forum and are presented with the no permissions page, also the ban reason to be shown in the admin/mod logs along with who banned the user - ban logs..

Being able to temp ban a member and customize the length of time they are banned for. Temp ban a member for a day, a week, two weeks, a month, or several months or as long as an administrator or moderator decides. When temp banning a member, automatically switch their group to "banned", when their ban expires they are automatically moved back into their original group as mentioned by the member above. I obviously mean a much more advanced banning/warn system that what is currently in place, not just the usual warn, suspend, ban system we have which is quite limited.

  • When you suspend a member (in the Warn Page) - The member automatically will be moved to Banned Group and his title will be changed to Banned. When he's back from the ban, he will automatically be back to the Members Group and his title will be changed.
  • PM - You've been warned!
  • Category Supervisor - In the Forums tabs in the ACP, you can choose a category and add her a moderator.
Thanks!

Yeah it would be nice if it will be added in 3.1 :)
